A new team can change how a player is used. It can also change how fans look back at the past. Mitch Marner’s first season in Vegas has done both. His role with the Golden Knights has raised fresh discussion among Maple Leafs fans.
Maple Leafs Fans Question Mitch Marner’s Role as Season Pressure Builds
Marner moved to the Vegas Golden Knights last July, looking for a reset. After years of pressure in Toronto, he joined a team with a winning track record and a more stable environment. The Maple Leafs agreed to a sign-and-trade as they worked through cap issues and roster balance. Marner signed an eight-year, $96 million contract and began a new chapter with Vegas.
What has stood out is how Vegas is using Marner. In 10 of the last 11 games, he has played center, a role he never truly held during his time with the Leafs. Golden Knights coach Bruce Cassidy explained the fit, saying Marner “plays like a centerman with the puck,” works well defensively, and stays active above the puck. What started as a short-term solution has turned into something more permanent.
Marner has spoken positively about the change. “Finding open ice, finding the puck, and making plays off that,” he said, while stressing the importance of building chemistry. The coaching staff believes the position suits his strengths.
That shift has caught the attention of Toronto fans. One fan wrote, “Nine years… not a single time was he open to the idea, lol.” Another said, “You can see his contributions more at the center, IMO.” The reaction has focused on why this role never developed in Toronto, rather than on Marner’s effort.
Vegas now has more options because of the move, especially with William Karlsson possibly out for the season.
Others focused on what Vegas still needs around him, with one fan saying, “It would be great if the VGK could find a big left-wing sniper who can bang, find open space in the offensive zone, and rifle shots accurately. It’s a big ask.” Another fan supported keeping him in the middle, writing, “If Marner is okay with it, leave him at center. If Karlsson is likely out, give him as much time in that position. Marner was such an awesome offseason acquisition.”

On the ice, Marner has delivered consistent results. He has 46 points in 44 games, ranks near the team lead in assists, and holds a plus-nine rating. His vision, passing, and movement remain central to his game, now from the middle of the ice.
The Maple Leafs and Golden Knights meet on Jan. 15 in Vegas. Toronto enters at 23-15-7, while Vegas sits at 21-11-12. For Leafs fans, the game brings more than standings implications. It brings another look at a familiar player in a role they never saw before.
