5 Positions Ole Miss Must Address in Transfer Portal After CFP Exit

Ole Miss, on the heels of a national semifinal defeat, must look into the transfer, in order to build a competitive roster for next season.

After falling to Miami in the national semifinal, Ole Miss needs to approach the offseason with ferocity. The Rebels lost by four points. In sports, moral victories do not exist. However, you can build upon a loss and clean up areas that could be considered weaknesses. The transfer portal takes priority immediately.

Quarterback

Today, the NCAA rejected quarterback Trinidad Chambliss’ motion for an additional year of eligibility. While playing at Ferris State, Chambliss missed a season due to respiratory issues and subsequent surgery.

With Chambliss unavailable and backup quarterback Austin Simmons also departing, the combined 5,279 total yards and 31 touchdowns they contributed together will be difficult to replace.

Mississippi needs to focus its transfer portal resources on filling this gap. One possible target is former Auburn quarterback Deuce Knight, who attended school in Lucedale, Miss., approximately four hours from campus. Whoever replaces Chambliss will be stepping in for the No. 5 quarterback in the PFSN College Quarterback Impact Rankings.

Wide Receiver

Four of the program’s receivers from this season will be leaving school via exhausted eligibility. What remains is a collection of average-sized wideouts. Teams that traditionally win the SEC of late will possess a bigger wideout, a big-play athlete who can make contested catches but also run away from trailing defensive backs.

New offensive coordinator John David Baker emphasizes movement and explosion above all else when it pertains to his wideouts.

Offensive Tackle

Chambliss enjoyed freedom to move due to excellent boundary protection. Tackles Diego Pounds and Jayden Williams will graduate, vacating their spots at left and right tackle, respectively.

If Baker’s offense wants to maintain tempo, they need tackles that either pin down the rusher on the inside or create an alley for the run. Either way, new tackles will make their way to Ole Miss.

Secondary

Carson Beck shredded the secondary. Worse still, the number of missed tackles put the defense in a far worse position. Golding, a former safety, must realize that stellar play on the back end is the key to defensive success.

Moreover, the secondary needs depth as well. Offenses will roll out multiple wide receivers, spreading out the defense and taking away their ability to hide weaker coverage.

Defensive Tackle

Granted, the graduation of Zxavian Harris should not be lauded as a catastrophic loss. However, losing a 340-pound run stopper requires attention. Yet, the key to Miami’s victory was its ability to run the ball, almost at will.

Often, they looked to run right over Harris’ side. The SEC is a juggernaut built on the ability to pound the ball to win games late. Miami wore Ole Miss out with the downhill running game. To address this, they must establish a deeper rotation upfront to prevent fatigue.
