Bryce Underwood Stays at Michigan, Eyes Breakout Under Whittingham

Bryce Underwood returns to Michigan for 2026 as Kyle Whittingham and Jason Beck build an offense designed for the QB's elite dual-threat abilities.

Bryce Underwood isn’t going anywhere. The most expensive recruit in college football history confirmed on Monday what Michigan fans had been hoping for since Kyle Whittingham’s arrival: he’s staying in Ann Arbor for his sophomore season.

After a turbulent freshman campaign that ended with a three-interception performance against Texas in the Citrus Bowl, Underwood’s commitment to the Wolverines signals belief in a new direction, and perhaps, a proper foundation for the generational talent to reach his full potential.

Bryce Underwood’s Michigan Return Weaponises Jason Beck’s Offense

Jason Beck overhauled a pedestrian offense at Utah in just one season, making it one of the most dangerous in the nation with Devon Dampier under center. Imagine what he can do with Underwood, a former five-star with all the tools in the world to be the best quarterback Michigan has had for a long, long time.

The numbers from Salt Lake City speak for themselves. Utah finished the 2025 season ranked fifth nationally in scoring offense (41.4 points per game), sixth in total yardage (478.6 yards per game), and second in rushing offense (269.8 yards per game).

Dampier, a transfer from New Mexico who followed Beck to Utah, earned Big 12 Newcomer of the Year honours after throwing for 2,490 yards and 24 touchdowns with just five interceptions while adding 835 yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground.

That dual-threat profile should sound familiar.

Underwood’s 6’4″, 225-pound frame and legitimate wheels — he rushed for 392 yards and six touchdowns as a freshman — make him an ideal fit for Beck’s quarterback-centric run game and RPO concepts, leading ESPN’s Booger McFarland to exclaim that “he’s got a better version of [Dampier] in Michigan with Bryce Underwood.”

Underwood Flashed in Michigan Freshman Campaign

Underwood’s freshman campaign was a tale of two quarterbacks.

Against Washington, he completed nearly 78% of his passes for 230 yards and two touchdowns in a dominant 24-7 victory. His connection with fellow freshman receiver Andrew Marsh blossomed throughout the season, culminating in a 12-catch, 189-yard performance at Wrigley Field against Northwestern.

Yet the highs were matched by troubling lows.

Against Oklahoma, USC, and Ohio State — Michigan’s three toughest tests — Underwood completed just 48.4% of his passes for 412 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. The sack numbers told a damning story. He was brought down at least once in every game except the Central Michigan opener.

PFSN’s College OL Impact metric scored Michigan’s offensive line above 80.0 or higher in only six contests, with the Purdue (71.3), Michigan State (74.5), and USC (75.9) matchups proving particularly problematic.

The 9-3 regular-season record and subsequent bowl defeat obscured a simple truth. Underwood’s raw tools were never in question last fall; his development under Sherrone Moore was.

Kyle Whittingham has Michigan Structured to Maximize Underwood

Whittingham understood the stakes immediately. His first meeting at Michigan wasn’t with administrators or coordinators; it was with Underwood himself.

“I wanted to get to know him. Everything from growing up, family, and what’s important to him,” Whittingham said following his introductory press conference. “He is a special young man. Carries himself the right way. Quarterback has to have the ‘it’ factor, and Bryce has the ‘it’ factor, along with a ton of talent.”

Beyond Beck’s offensive acumen, the Wolverines are bringing in Jim Harding, widely regarded as one of the premier offensive line coaches in the country, and dedicated quarterbacks coach Koy Detmer Jr. The infrastructure Underwood lacked in 2025 is being constructed specifically around his skill set.

Don’t expect Underwood’s $10-12 million NIL deal, the package that made him the most expensive recruiting flip in college football history, to be the story in 2026. His buyout situation, which some speculated might complicate a potential transfer, ultimately proved irrelevant. Underwood wanted to stay.

Michigan’s 2026 schedule features matchups against Oklahoma, Iowa, Oregon, Indiana, Penn State, and Ohio State. If Underwood is going to cement himself among the elite quarterbacks in college football, he’ll have ample opportunity to prove it against conference heavyweights.

The Wolverines were effectively one win shy of the College Football Playoff in 2025. With three years of eligibility remaining and a coaching staff tailor-made for his development, Underwood’s ceiling remains tantalisingly high.

The question is no longer whether Michigan has its quarterback. It’s whether they can build a contender around him, and with Whittingham’s staff settling into Ann Arbor, early returns suggest the answer is yes.
