Tennis Fans React to Coco Gauff’s Explanation Regarding American Fans’ Support in International Tournaments

At the 2026 United Cup, Team USA, which includes Gauff, Taylor Fritz, Varvara Lepchenko, Mackenzie McDonald, Nicole Melichar-Martinez, and Christian Harrison, is placed in Group A alongside Argentina and Spain. Team USA defeated Argentina 2-1 and also overcame Spain 2-1 to advance in the tournament.

During a press conference at the United Cup, Gauff commented that American players often do not receive the same support as players from other countries. She described American fans as the “worst” in tennis regarding support. Her comments were negatively received by the tennis community, prompting her to provide an explanation.

The former world No. 2 took to social media, stating that some people had taken her comments “out of context.” She clarified that she does not expect fans to travel to tournaments to watch and cheer for American players, as that is not financially easy for many.

Gauff explained that she meant to convey that even in America, the cheers from fans are not as loud as those from other countries, often accompanied by their nation’s flags and colors.

Gauff’s clarification appeased the tennis community, with many taking to social media to express their thoughts. One fan recalled watching Anna Kalinskaya and Peyton Stearns compete in Cincinnati, noting that the Russian player received louder cheers than the American.

“She is right. I remember watching Peyton Stearns against Anna Kalinskaya in Cincy, it was a tight match and no one was cheering for her. Same with Anisimova, same place and she was fresh out of Wimbledon final,” a fan posted on X (formerly known as Twitter).

Another described Gauff’s reasoning as her being “so real.”

“god she’s so real 😭. There’s some fascinating stuff to unpack here about american fans + tennis + expressing fandom + patriotism. And it’s making me reflect on my own behavior because I would never show up to a tournament with a US flag even when rooting for US players,” a fan wrote.

One fan remarked that it was “wild” how Gauff’s initial comments had been so “misconstrued.”

“its wild how this got misconstrued bcos its clear that her point was that american fans who are alr in attendance are not supporting their players well enough not that theres not enough of them in attendance,” a fan posted.

Here are some other fan reactions:

“Omg I just realized she tweeted this before her match🥺 yall stressed my girl out, and that’s probably why she was struggling in the first set,” a fan wrote.

“You see when you spot that people are putting words into your mouth and interpreting what you said the wrong way this is the best and most effective way to clear everything up,” a fan posted.

“I totally understood what you meant originally. A clear example everyone can understand is that no matter when and where Joao Fonseca is playing, there are entire sections of the crowd in Brazilian colors and it’s exciting to witness that kind of passion,” a fan wrote.

Looking ahead, following their victories over Spain and Argentina, Team USA has advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2026 United Cup.
