‘Man Is Waiting by the Phone’ — Manchester United Fans Hilariously Name Their Replacement for Sacked Ruben Amorim

Manchester United decided to part ways with Ruben Amorim on Monday, ending the 40-year-old Portuguese's 14-month-long stint.

Manchester United ended its 14-month association with Ruben Amorim on Monday, January 5, confirming the move in an official statement. And, Red Devils fans opted not to waste time offering their suggestions for the club’s next head coach.

Fans React to Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United Exit

In their official statement, Manchester United explained their decision to part company with Amorim and also thanked the Portuguese for guiding them to a UEFA Europa League final.

“Ruben Amorim has departed his role as Head Coach of Manchester United. Ruben was appointed in November 2024 and led the team to a UEFA Europa League Final in Bilbao in May. With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change,” the statement read.

“This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish. The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future. Darren Fletcher will take charge of the team against Burnley on Wednesday,” the statement concluded.

With ex-Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher named as United’s interim boss, one fan sarcastically suggested the Red Devils should approach Sam Allardyce for the full-time role. He posted about the former West Ham United, Everton, and Newcastle United boss on X: “The man is waiting by the phone. Give him a ring.”

One Red Devils fan suggested former Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca, who left the Blues on Thursday, Jan. 1, should be brought in to fill the void left by Amorim. He commented on X: “Maresca as replacement.”

Another Manchester United supporter made an observation about how Red Devils left-back Luke Shaw has seen six managers arrive and leave since 2014. He commented on X: “Luke Shaw somehow survives another manager.”

Another fan urged the Old Trafford outfit to not name former Barcelona player and manager Xavi Hernandez, who notched the 2022-23 La Liga title from the dugout, as their next head coach. He wrote on X: “No matter what (Manchester United) do not sign Xavi. We don’t have Espanyol in the Premier League.”

One Manchester United fan put forward former Red Devils manager Erik ten Hag’s name for the online discussion, writing on X: “Bring back Ten Hag.”

Amorim, who replaced Ten Hag in November 2024, guided the Red Devils to just 15 wins in 47 Premier League games. He helped the club finish 15th in the league table last campaign and leaves with the team in sixth place in the 2025-26 league standings after 20 games.
