In an earlier interview with the Daily Mail, Evert had admitted that she adopted a more considerate parenting approach, which was very different from the strict, routine-like life she had grown up with. She had given her sons to grow in their own capacities, so that they could express their opinions and feelings as well.
Speaking about it, Evert said, “Because my upbringing was so strict, so black and white with no grey, I went the other way with my sons. I listened to them, let them talk me into letting them stay up an extra hour at bedtime. I probably could have been stricter, but I’d tell them, ‘just do your best’. As a result, they are very kind and loving.”
Evert maintains a very cordial relationship with her ex-husband, Andy Mill, a former Alpine ski racer. The tennis icon was supported by Mill and their sons during her battle against cancer, which the American legend won with the determination she was famous for on the tennis court.
During the late 1970s and for a major part of the 1980s, Chris Evert’s name was synonymous with women’s tennis. The American legend won an astounding 157 singles titles, including 18 Grand Slams. Even in doubles, she was a tremendous competitor, winning 32 titles, including three Grand Slam titles.
Evert’s rivalry with Martina Navratilova during the above-mentioned two decades is part of tennis folklore. The pair met 80 times on Tour, with Navratilova having a 43-37 edge in the rivalry. Besides her 18 Grand Slam titles, Evert was also a runner-up at Majors on 16 occasions, 10 of which came against Navratilova.
The pair contested 60 finals altogether, 24 of which Evert won.
