The Edmonton Oilers are once again searching for answers in goal, this time after Tristan Jarry’s latest injury. Edmonton is coming off a 4-3 win over the Vegas Golden Knights. Currently, it sits third in the Pacific Division with an 18-13-6 record, but goaltending remains a major concern.
With Jarry sidelined, a new and familiar name has begun to surface in trade and comeback speculation. An NHL insider linked the Oilers to an iconic former Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender.
Oilers Linked to Former Penguins Goalie as Trade Buzz Builds
Jarry was placed on injured reserve after suffering a lower-body injury during Thursday’s 3–1 win over the Boston Bruins. The setback came just as he was beginning to settle in, having appeared in only three games for Edmonton following his recent trade from Pittsburgh that sent Stuart Skinner the other way.
In his absence, the Oilers have been forced to rely on Calvin Pickard and Connor Ingram, who were recalled from the Bakersfield Condors of the AHL. Pickard started Saturday’s 5-2 loss to the Minnesota Wild, allowing four goals, while Ingram got the nod in Sunday’s win and surrendered three goals but managed to hold on for the victory.
The deeper stats tell a more concerning story. Pickard’s .861 save percentage and Ingram’s .856 mark in the AHL both sit near the bottom of their respective leagues, highlighting just how thin Edmonton’s goaltending depth really is.
With no proven NHL option ready to step in behind Jarry, the Oilers may be forced to make a move sooner rather than later.
Appearing on The Kevin Karius Show, NHL insider Frank Seravalli hinted that once the roster freeze is lifted, Edmonton could explore an unexpected but intriguing option.
Seravalli said, “I’d have to think that one name that the Edmonton Oilers are thinking about today in this circumstance is Mark Andre Fleury.”
He pointed out that Fleury has been back on the ice in Minnesota recently and even played in a preseason game with the Penguins earlier this year. “I think he’s got the itch to keep playing,” He added.
According to Seravalli, while Fleury has settled in Minnesota, the path there is crowded with Filip Gustavsson and Jesper Wallstedt, leaving little room for him. “If he’s gonna come back, it’s gonna be a team that has an authentic chance to win, and that’s got the Oilers written all over it,” Seravalli said.
When asked about the likelihood of Fleury resurfacing, Seravalli estimated the odds at 70-30.

Now 41, Fleury stepped away from the game after the 2024-25 season, having played 26 games with the Minnesota Wild. He also took the ice in a preseason game with his old team in Pittsburgh.
It’s still unclear if the Oilers could talk him into another NHL run. But the possibility of turning to a trusted veteran like Fleury is starting to feel more realistic.
