Explaining the Christmas-Themed Candy Cane Patches on NFL Jerseys

Typically, the calendar is divided into various segments for most of the major American sports. Traditionally, Christmas was a day reserved for the NBA to schedule some of its most high-profile matchups.

The NFL season winding down provided fans with an excellent opportunity to catch the basketball action. However, in recent years, football has made it a point to try to maintain a monopoly throughout the year.

As a result, the league also hosts a plethora of high-profile matchups on Christmas Day. To mark the occasion, they go a step further than just scheduling the games, with the candy cane patches a special addition to that effect.

A tradition that began last season, with the games being broadcast simultaneously worldwide on Netflix, saw the patches being introduced into the jerseys. Last year, the Baltimore Ravens, Pittsburgh Steelers, Kansas City Chiefs, and Houston Texans received the honor.

As the official NFL website described the phenomenon, “A festive, holiday-inspired uniform patch during their games on Saturday, Dec. 21 and again on Christmas Day.” Describing the design itself, they explained, “Featuring the NFL shield backed by two candy canes.”

With games on Christmas Day becoming a staple of the calendar since 2020, this year will mark the sixth-straight year of the occasion. This year, however, the field has been severely expanded for teams to sport the candy cane patch.

The teams wearing the patch will be the Dallas Cowboys, the Washington Commanders, the Detroit Lions, the Minnesota Vikings, the Denver Broncos, and the Kansas City Chiefs, all of whom will be playing games in Week 16 as well as on Christmas.

However, the Chiefs, Commanders, and the Vikings could be without their starting quarterbacks as Patrick Mahomes, Jayden Daniels, and J.J. McCarthy are all currently injured.
