Maple Leafs Beat Reporter Believes Team Already Has Craig Berube Replacement Lined Up

Frustration grows in Toronto as losses mount, fueling speculation that the Maple Leafs already have a coaching replacement lined up.

The Toronto Maple Leafs continue to find themselves in the same uncomfortable spot, competitive enough to stay relevant but inconsistent enough to raise doubts. Each loss feels heavier, not because the season is lost, but because answers remain elusive.

As frustration grows inside and outside the room, attention has turned from short-term fixes to what might come next behind the bench.

Maple Leafs Beat Reporter Suggests Toronto Has a Coaching Replacement Ready

The Maple Leafs have spent much of the season hovering near the playoff cut line, rarely showing the kind of sustained stretch that signals control over their direction. They often dictate pace and possession, yet the results fail to follow consistently. Issues with finishing, defensive coverage, and special teams continue to undermine otherwise solid efforts, keeping Toronto trapped in a familiar cycle.

Those problems came into focus Thursday night in Washington, where Toronto suffered a 4-0 shutout loss to the Capitals. The Leafs struggled to match urgency, generated little sustained pressure, and watched their top line struggle throughout the night. The game slipped away early and never felt within reach.

Afterward, Craig Berube offered a blunt assessment of what he saw. “They had way more urgency in their game, more passion in their game,” Berube said. “That’s the difference.” When asked how that gap could exist given the standings, Berube deflected the responsibility back to the room, saying, “Ask those guys, not me.”

That exchange intensified speculation around Berube’s future, speculation that Maple Leafs beat reporter Howard Berger believes has already moved beyond theory. Writing for Between the Posts, Berger suggested that Toronto has a replacement lined up, pointing to Peter DeBoer as the expected successor. He framed the situation as another chapter in the franchise’s long history of coaching turnover, where bench changes become the default response during periods of frustration.

“Expect that Peter DeBoer will replace Craig Berube as coach of the Leafs,” Berger wrote.

Berger’s evaluation went beyond the bench, questioning whether the current core can drive playoff success regardless of who coaches them. He suggested that Toronto’s lack of edge, urgency, and follow-through has persisted across multiple coaching regimes, making another change feel inevitable rather than corrective.

The Leafs have been securing a playoff berth for the last nine seasons. However, they have failed to go beyond the second round. However, even this is rare, as they have lost in the first round seven times. This happened during a time when Mitch Marner was part of the core. So, Berger is right in his assessment that Berube is the latest figure caught in a cycle that has defined the franchise for decades.

Toronto’s recent slide has sharpened every opinion, and losses like the one in Washington only amplify the noise. Whether Berger’s projection proves accurate or not, the reality is difficult to ignore. Patience is wearing thin, and until performance aligns with expectations, the debate surrounding Berube, his potential replacement, and the team’s broader direction will continue to define the Leafs’ season.
