Top seed Learner Tien is set for an all-American semifinal clash against sixth-seeded Nishesh Basavareddy at the Next Gen ATP Finals. Tien rebounded from an opening loss to Rafael Jodar by beating Martin Landaluce, then sealed his spot with a 3-4(2), 4-1, 4-2, 4-2 win over Nicolai Budkov Kjaer.
On the other hand, Basavareddy had a decent start at Jeddah, winning his first match against Dino Prižmić in four sets. But the American had a setback in the next game, losing to Alexander Blockx in straight sets. However, in a must-win situation, he brought his best, winning 4-3 (3), 4-2, 4-3 (5) against Justin Engel in the last group match.

Tien vs. Basavareddy Head-to-Head
Tien has a 1-0 head-to-head record over Basavareddy, with the left-handed player winning the only match 7-6 (5), 6-3, 6-2 at this year’s Wimbledon.
The duo has also played at a couple of Challenger-level matches in 2024, both of which were won by Tien.
Tien vs. Basavareddy Prediction
In his previous round against Kjaer, Tien had a strong serving performance, winning 72 percent of the service points, especially winning over 70 percent of his points behind the second serve. On return, he attacked the opponent’s second serve, winning 63 percent of the second-serve return points, which helped him break his opponent’s serve three times.
In his must-win match against Engel, Basavareddy won 80 percent of the service points, dropping only three points behind his first serve. The American player had over a 60 percent success rate against his opponent’s second serve, but could not capitalize on break point situations, converting only one of seven break point opportunities in the match.
Tien has a decent record on indoor hard courts, with the American winning his maiden ATP title on the surface, as he won the Moselle Open this year. He also has a runner-up finish at an indoor hard-court Challenger event in Knoxville last year and has two titles on the surface on the ITF Tour as well. Meanwhile, Basavareddy has yet to win a title indoors, but has reached two Challenger-level finals on the surface last year.
Given Tien’s record against Basavareddy and on the hard courts, the top seed is the firm favorite to win the match and reach the final.
Pick: Tien to win in straight sets
