NHL insider Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun emphasized the difficulty Ottawa is facing, noting that Vancouver’s demand for a first-round pick complicates trade talks. “One way or another, the Ottawa Senators need to find the answers. They either have to come from within or Steve Staios must make a move to help his troubled club get back on track,” Garrioch wrote.
Sherwood has 13 goals and four assists in 33 games this season, and despite some recent scoring struggles, multiple teams in the Eastern Conference continue to show interest.
Another insider, Rick Dhaliwal, added insight on Donnie & Dhali, highlighting that the Canucks should consider moving Sherwood sooner rather than later because of strong demand.
“Despite Sherwood scoring one goal in 13 games, a bunch of teams are still in on him,” Dhaliwal said. “The Canucks don’t want to go past $3-3.5 million for Sherwood. He’s going to get more on July 1st, and there’s a bunch of teams in on him because his salary is low.”
Vancouver is aiming to secure a first-round pick in return, making Ottawa’s decision more complicated as it weighs short-term needs against long-term costs.
