Why Does Toni Nadal Question the Timing of the Split?

The tennis world remains stunned by the news that Alcaraz, 22, severed ties with Ferrero after seven dominant years. Together, the duo captured 24 ATP Tour singles titles and six majors. Yet, despite finishing the 2025 campaign as the year-end No. 1, their partnership is done. Toni Nadal, 64, admitted the move makes little sense from a sporting perspective.

“Of course it has surprised me, especially after such a good season,” Nadal said, per Radioestadio Noche via Marca. “The logical thing was to continue, I’m surprised because Alcaraz finishes as number 1 in the world.”

The uncle and former coach of Rafael Nadal suggested that the power dynamics in modern tennis often complicate these relationships. He pointed out a harsh reality regarding the business side of the sport. “Relationships in the tennis world are difficult because the one who pays, which is the player, usually pays to hear what he wants to hear,” he said.

Beyond the financial dynamics, Toni Nadal believes the split likely stems from personal differences rather than on-court performance. Since Ferrero reportedly wished to stay, the decision rested solely with the young champion.

“The decision I understand is Carlos’ because Ferrero has stated that he wants to continue, so I imagine that the decision is not tennis-related,” Nadal explained.

How Successful Was the Carlos Alcaraz-Juan Carlos Ferrero Era?

The numbers make the breakup even more baffling. Alcaraz reclaimed the Year-End No. 1 trophy in 2025, a feat he first achieved in 2022. His season was nothing short of spectacular, featuring eight singles titles and two major victories at the French Open and US Open. Toni Nadal emphasized that Ferrero’s resume with Alcaraz speaks for itself.

“At a tennis level, Carlos has to be very satisfied with the work that Ferrero has done in all this time,” Nadal said. “I would have liked Ferrero to have stayed because I think he was doing a very good job. I would have liked them to have been together throughout their careers because I think they both did very well.”

Before guiding Alcaraz to superstardom, Ferrero coached German standout Alexander Zverev. As a player, Ferrero was a force himself, winning 16 singles titles and three Davis Cup championships.
