NJ Devils Trade Rumors: $63,000,000 Former Maple Leafs Target Could Be Back on the Market

Devils defenseman surfaces in trade talks as teams weigh a $63M contract and injury history against his offensive impact.

The New Jersey Devils have been navigating a season of ups and downs, striving to remain competitive while managing injuries and lineup adjustments. Wins have come in short bursts, and losses have often followed quickly, leaving the team hovering in the middle of the Metropolitan Division standings. Despite these challenges, the Devils remain within striking distance of a playoff spot, although they have yet to establish a clear separation from their division rivals.

Injuries and roster rotations have been a constant theme, forcing the Devils to adjust their depth and ice time carefully. Key players have faced setbacks that have limited consistency, and management has had to balance immediate needs with long-term strategy. This ongoing shuffle has added uncertainty to the season, leaving fans and analysts watching every move closely.

Could Dougie Hamilton Be on the Move?

Dougie Hamilton, a high-profile defenseman for New Jersey, has emerged at the center of trade speculation. Signed to a seven-year, $63 million deal, Hamilton carries a cap hit of $9 million per season, and his contract runs through 2027-28.

NHL insider Kevin Weekes noted on X, “Per sources, I’m told D Hamilton and F Palat are among names that have been discussed in potential trade scenarios with @NJDevils.”

The post has reignited chatter about Hamilton’s future, highlighting the team’s openness to considering options for his role.

Hamilton’s injury history has played a significant part in shaping the conversation. Over the past three seasons, he has battled both lower-body and upper-body injuries that disrupted his rhythm and limited his ice time. This season, he missed four games due to a lower-body injury and was listed as day-to-day in November, although he returned without a prolonged shutdown.

Previous seasons were even more challenging: a lower-body injury in 2024-25 ended his campaign 18 games early, and a pectoral tear in 2023-24 sidelined him for the final 62 games, requiring extensive rehab.

Interest in Hamilton isn’t limited to speculation. Back in July, an NHL executive told RG Media, “Teams are calling on [Hamilton] now. I heard the Leafs looked into him. They’re looking into multiple options for their blue line, and a lot of them have offensive flair. That’s their strength, so there’s a common thread with their trade targets right now, and Hamilton fits the bill.”

The remark shows his appeal for teams seeking a defenseman who can contribute offensively while anchoring the blue line.

The Devils’ current roster situation adds complexity to any potential move. With 23 players active and 49 under contract, the team has limited cap flexibility, projecting a nearly $6 million shortfall.

Recent months have seen frequent recalls and assignments from the AHL, including players such as Shane Lachance, Ethan Edwards, and Nathan Legare, as well as injury-related adjustments for Jack Hughes, Zack MacEwen, and Timo Meier.

These moves reflect the ongoing challenge of managing a team in flux, with Hamilton’s availability potentially offering both an opportunity and a risk.
