Where Do Texas Tech and Arkansas Stand Heading Into Week 6?
Texas Tech and Arkansas will meet for the 82nd time in 83 years, with the Red Raiders holding a 41-40 edge in their all-time matchup. Both teams sport a 7-2 record, with the Razorbacks aiming to gain their second win over an AP Top 25 team. On the other hand, the Red Raiders are seeking their first Top 25 win after losing to Illinois and Purdue last month.
Since losing to the Boilermakers by 30 points on Nov. 21, Grant McCasland and Texas Tech are on a roll, winning their last three games against New Orleans (82-50), Wyoming (76-62), and LSU (82-58).
JT Toppin and Christian Anderson are the Red Raiders’ dynamic duo this season. Toppin, a 6’9″ junior out of Oak Cliff Faith Family Academy, has averaged a double-double of 20.8 points and 11.5 rebounds per game. The forward is shooting 53.8% from the field and is providing good numbers on defense, tallying 1.4 steals and 1.3 blocks per game.
His partner-in-crime, Anderson, is not too far behind, averaging 19.1 points, 3.3 rebounds, 7.0 assists, and 2.0 steals per game. The 6’3″ sophomore has improved mightily on his field-goal shooting, making 46.3% of his attempts, which is a 3.4% uptick. He is also shooting 43.1% from the 3-point line, giving Texas Tech a 1-2 inside-outside punch that is out to create chaos against opposing defenses.
Aside from Toppin and Anderson, Texas Tech also relies on the contributions of LaJuan Watts and Donovan Powell. Watts has tallied 12.0 ppg, 6.1 rpg, and 2.1 apg, while Powell has produced 12.0 ppg, 3.1 rpg, and 1.3 spg. They hope their efforts will help them beat Arkansas and improve to 8-2 this season.
On the other hand, Arkansas has finally beaten a Top 25 opponent this season, winning over No. 6 Louisville 89-80 on December 3. The Razorbacks had strung up defeats against then No. 22-ranked Michigan State and No. 4-ranked Duke, and the win against the Cardinals proved that they are back on track.
In Arkansas’ last game on December 6, freshman guard Darius Acuff Jr led the way with 18 points, five rebounds, eight assists, and one steal, as the Razorbacks beat Fresno State 82-58, raising their season win rate to 78%.
In nine games, Acuff is leading Arkansas’ offense, averaging 17.4 ppg, 3.0 rpg, and 5.4 apg this season. Meanwhile, fellow freshman Meleek Thomas is the team’s second-best producer in offense, tallying 16.9 ppg, 4.2 rpg, 4.1 apg, and 1.6 apg.
Returnees Trevon Brazile, D.J. Wagner, Karter Knox, and Billy Richmond III have contributed in their own way for the Razorbacks, averaging at least 8.3 points per game.
As a team, Arkansas is averaging 87.6 ppg while recording 38.9 rpg, 17.2 apg, 8.2 spg and 4.7 bpg. Texas Tech has averaged 81.4 ppg, 40.3 rpg, 15.0 apg, 7.4 spg, and 3.6 bpg. The game is expected to be close, with the winning team likely to move up the AP Top 25 rankings after the Week 6 games are completed.
