The Pittsburgh Penguins have started the 2025-26 season with a 14-7-6 record, igniting their playoff hopes after missing it for the past three years. Their offense has been a highlight, averaging just over three goals per game, led by Sidney Crosby, who tops the team in both points and goals. Evgeni Malkin has also been instrumental, particularly with assists, keeping the Penguins’ attack balanced and dangerous.
Defensively, Pittsburgh has held consistently, allowing 2.70 goals per game, and strong goaltending has helped the team stay in tight contests. While the team has shown consistency against tough opponents, injuries are beginning to test their depth. One key concern is Malkin, whose recent absence has raised questions about his return.
Insider Josh Yohe Provides Clarity on Evgeni Malkin’s Status
Evgeni Malkin, the 39-year-old alternate captain, did not play against the Dallas Stars on Sunday due to an upper-body injury. The Penguins initially suggested he might be available, but the team later confirmed he would be held out, listing him as day-to-day. This usually signals a short-term absence rather than a longer one.
NHL insider Josh Yohe of The Athletic wrote in his Monday column, “I don’t believe Evgeni Malkin is dealing with a serious injury. The Penguins implied Saturday that he would be OK to play Sunday. That obviously wasn’t the case, but I suspect we’ll see him back in the lineup at some point this week.”
His insight reinforces the expectation that Malkin will return soon and continue to contribute to Pittsburgh’s playoff push.
Despite his age, Malkin remains a key contributor. In 26 games this season, he has scored 8 goals and added 21 assists for 29 points. He has a +5 rating and 20 penalty minutes. Malkin’s production has been particularly strong in victories, where he has 21 points in 14 wins. He also continues to play an important role on the power play, providing playmaking and leadership.

Malkin is signed to a four-year, $24.4 million contract with a $6.1 million cap hit, which expires at the end of this season. His health and performance remain important for a Penguins team aiming to stay competitive in the Metropolitan Division.
Looking ahead, Pittsburgh will face the Anaheim Ducks on Tuesday at 7:00 PM ET. The Penguins will aim to continue their strong start while integrating Malkin back into the lineup once he is cleared to play.
