NHL Trade Rumors: Flyers Willing to Take Huge Risk By Swinging Quinn Hughes Trade

Flyers reportedly ready to take a major gamble, exploring a high-stakes trade for star defenseman Quinn Hughes.

The Philadelphia Flyers have spent recent years stockpiling young talent and draft picks, patiently building toward a sustainable contender. Now, one insider report suggests the front office is ready to accelerate that timeline with a high-stakes gamble on a superstar defenseman.

Will the Philadelphia Flyers Trade for Quinn Hughes Without an Extension?

Rumors linking the Flyers to Quinn Hughes have intensified, but questions remain about whether Philadelphia would pull the trigger without a long-term guarantee. Hughes, who won the Norris Trophy in 2024, becomes eligible for a contract extension on July 1, 2026.

Daily Faceoff’s Anthony Di Marco addressed this specific scenario during a recent mailbag segment. When asked if the Flyers would demand an extension before trading for the Vancouver Canucks captain, the insider provided a clear answer regarding the team’s aggressive stance.

“I mentioned this specifically in my story earlier in the week, and the answer is ‘no,'” Di Marco stated. “I, too, thought the Flyers would perhaps wait until the summer to pull the trigger on a Hughes deal when they could have a theoretical extension in place.”

Trading for a player of Hughes’ caliber usually requires long-term security, especially given reports suggesting he may want to play for the New Jersey Devils. However, Di Marco reported that Philadelphia has calculated the odds and sees a safety net in the worst-case scenario.

“Speaking with Flyers sources, I’m told the team would trade for Hughes this season, even with the risk of there not being an extension in place beyond 2027,” Di Marco reported.

The strategy relies on the market value of the 26-year-old defenseman, who carries a $7.85 million cap hit through the 2026-27 campaign. If the partnership doesn’t work out long-term, the Flyers believe they won’t be left empty-handed.

“The reason is simple: the Flyers believe that they can flip him to regain value if they are unable to re-sign Hughes beyond next season,” the insider explained.

What Will It Cost to Acquire the Canucks Captain?

Philadelphia sees the potential for two playoff runs with Hughes as justification for the initial cost. However, the price to acquire an elite defender in his prime will be substantial.

“Two potential playoff runs with Hughes seems enough for the Flyers to take that gamble, the question now is what the cost will be,” he wrote. “You can imagine that the Vancouver Canucks will be looking for a king’s ransom,” Di Marco noted.

The Flyers possess the necessary capital to make such a deal work. Their war chest includes multiple first-round picks, young NHL players, and elite prospects like Matvei Michkov. Vancouver faces a difficult decision regarding their captain’s future, but if they decide to move him, Philadelphia appears ready to pay the price.
