The Los Angeles Chargers offense has largely been impressive this season, but inconsistency and a string of injuries have often held the unit back. With the Chargers fighting to stay in the postseason race and a challenging schedule looming, getting key contributors back on the field is essential for their push toward January football.
Fortunately for Los Angeles, the team received a significant boost to its ground game ahead of its Monday Night Football matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles. Omarion Hampton is set to be activated from injured reserve, giving the Chargers much-needed depth and explosiveness in the backfield at a crucial point in the season.
What’s the Latest on Omarion Hampton’s Injury?
Hampton suffered an ankle injury during the Chargers’ Week 5 loss to the Washington Commanders on October 5. The injury was initially believed to be a high ankle sprain, but NFL insider Ian Rapoport later reported that Hampton actually sustained a fracture, extending the expected recovery window.
The Chargers placed Hampton on injured reserve on October 7. He has missed the past seven games as a result of the ankle fracture, with Los Angeles going 5-2 in his absence.
Los Angeles officially designated Hampton to return from injured reserve in Week 13, opening his 21-day practice window. Hampton got in three limited practices last week, his first official practice participation since suffering the injury in early October.
Although he was inactive for the win over the Raiders, Hampton participated fully in practice on both Friday and Saturday and is now expected to be activated and available ahead of the Monday night matchup with the Eagles, per Rapoport.

Prior to his injury in Week 5, Hampton was leading all rookies in the NFL with 450 scrimmage yards. He had achieved two touchdowns and his inaugural 100-yard game through his first five appearances. Hampton was averaging 90 scrimmage yards per game before going down.
In Hampton’s absence, running back Kimani Vidal has stepped up to fill the lead role. The sixth-round pick from the 2024 draft has accumulated three games with over 100 rushing yards and currently leads the Chargers with 543 yards on the ground, along with three touchdowns.
Even when Hampton returns, the Chargers will likely implement a committee approach. Vidal’s production during Hampton’s absence has earned him a meaningful role going forward. Fans and fantasy managers should expect Hampton to ease back into the offense rather than immediately resuming his previous workload.
The timing of his return is significant. The upcoming matchup against Philadelphia presents a favorable opportunity, as the Eagles’ defense has increasingly become susceptible to the run. With the Chargers pushing for a playoff spot, Hampton’s reactivation provides a valuable boost, even if his individual fantasy ceiling is tempered by Vidal’s continued role.
