RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner is reportedly closing in on a move to Inter Miami, where he could link up with Argentina legend Lionel Messi next year. The soon-to-be 30-year-old was once viewed as one of Germany’s brightest attacking talents, but after a dominant first spell at Leipzig, he has struggled to recapture that form during later stops at Chelsea, Leipzig again, and Tottenham Hotspur.

According to Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg, Werner and his representatives are currently in talks with Inter Miami over a potential move in January 2026. The 29-year-old German attacker is likely to join the reigning MLS Eastern Conference champions barring any unexpected developments.
At Inter Miami, Messi unsurprisingly bears a significant amount of attacking responsibility, from scoring goals to setting them up for his teammates. His supporting cast could be weakened soon, as Luis Suarez could leave the Herons after the end of his deal this month.

Should Timo Werner manage to secure a move to Inter Miami next month, he could fill the potential void left by Suarez. The 2020-21 UEFA Champions League winner could shoulder some attacking responsibility and also help Messi with his pace on either flank.
However, Werner’s performances in the last two seasons have been quite underwhelming. He has made one substitute appearance for Leipzig in the 2025-26 season after registering three goals and seven assists in 41 overall outings while on a one-and-a-half-year loan at Spurs.

Werner, who is reportedly under a $47 million contract spread over four years, could rise to the occasion should he join the Herons. He could benefit from a change in environment and potentially launch a late bid to make Germany’s 2026 FIFA World Cup squad.
Messi Receives Advice About Inter Miami
Former Argentina conditioning coach Fernando Signorini has advised Messi to leave Inter Miami’s camp next year to prepare for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
“Leo needs to prioritise the World Cup. He’s caught up in this infernal record-breaking machine that I don’t know the point of because what he’s doing now [at Inter Miami] isn’t football, it’s a parody of football,” Signorini said during a recent chat on Super Deportivo Radio.
“With three months to go before the World Cup, he should take at least one month with his family to detox and come back with the hunger that the absence will surely cause him,” he concluded.
The Argentina captain will next be in action in Inter Miami’s maiden MLS Cup final against Vancouver Whitecaps at Chase Stadium in Florida on Saturday (December 6).
