Omarion Hampton Injury Update

Hampton suffered an ankle injury during the Chargers’ Week 5 loss to the Washington Commanders on October 5. The injury was initially believed to be a high ankle sprain, but NFL insider Ian Rapoport later reported that Hampton actually sustained a fracture, extending the expected recovery window.

The Chargers placed Hampton on injured reserve on October 7. He has missed the past seven games as a result of the ankle fracture.

Los Angeles officially designated Hampton to return from injured reserve in Week 13, opening his 21-day practice window. Hampton got in three limited practices last week, his first official practice participation since suffering the injury in early October.

The Chargers have not yet held an official practice this week. Since they play Monday night, their first official injury report is due on Thursday. However, journalists provided insights from the Chargers’ unofficial practice on Wednesday. Hampton participated in drills while wearing a non-contact jersey.

The expectation is Hampton will be limited when the Chargers release their official injury report Thursday. Hopefully he can upgrade to full practice participation by Saturday. Hampton is expected to make his return Monday night against Philadelphia.

Hampton Fantasy Outlook

Prior to his injury in Week 5, Hampton was leading all rookies in the NFL with 380 scrimmage yards. He had achieved two touchdowns and his inaugural 100-yard game through his first five appearances. Hampton was averaging 90 scrimmage yards per game before going down.

In Hampton’s absence, running back Kimani Vidal has stepped up to fill the lead role. The sixth-round pick from the 2024 draft has accumulated three games with over 100 rushing yards and currently leads the Chargers with 543 yards on the ground, along with three touchdowns. Vidal has started all seven games since Week 5 and posted four outings above 17 PPR points.

Even when Hampton returns, the Chargers will likely implement a committee approach. Vidal’s production during Hampton’s absence has earned him a meaningful role going forward. Fantasy managers should expect Hampton to ease back into the offense rather than immediately resuming his previous workload.

The matchup against Philadelphia is a favorable one for the Chargers’ rushing attack. The Eagles defense has become quite the run funnel as of late.

Hampton’s return comes at a time when the Chargers need all hands on deck for their playoff push, but his fantasy value will be capped by the likely split with Vidal.
