NFL Insider Reveals Browns’ Decision on Shedeur Sanders Ahead of Week 13

Are the Browns willing to bet on rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders for the rest of the NFL season? NFL Insider drops latest update on the QB situation.

A rookie quarterback’s first win has shifted the Cleveland Browns’ late‑season calculus. With the Browns all but out of the playoff race and intent on sorting their future at the position, the team will test whether Shedeur Sanders can build on a composed debut and hold the job through December.

The decision lands amid Dillon Gabriel’s return to health and a coaching staff balancing development with evaluation on a short week.

Shedeur Sanders Gets Another Start Over Dillon Gabriel

Cleveland confirmed Sanders will start again in Week 13 after he became the franchise’s first quarterback to win his first career start since 1995, throwing for 209 yards with one touchdown and one interception in a 24-10 road victory at Las Vegas.

Sanders took first‑team reps all week and earned the nod despite Dillon Gabriel clearing concussion protocol, reflecting the staff’s plan to measure multiple games of tape on the rookie.

Head coach Kevin Stefanski credited Sanders’ approach: “Very committed to working at it, doing a great job, communicating with coaches, with the players. Good work week, but nothing different. I think any player though, once you get one game under your belt, you got the next one coming. I think it can only help.”

NFL insider Adam Schefter detailed the organization’s stance, stating: “Sanders now has the opportunity not only to start again Sunday against the 49ers, but also to play well enough to continue earning starts for the rest of this season… The Browns are open to giving Sanders an extended look for the rest of this season, just as fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel got in the first half of this season… But much of that decision will be dictated by how Sanders plays, starting Sunday.”

That framework mirrors Cleveland’s approach to Gabriel earlier this fall, when he started six games (1-5) as the franchise gathered an initial evaluation.

Stefanski also dismissed weather concerns for Sanders’ first home start, pointing to his college experience: “He played at Colorado. That’s a lot of wind that you’re going to get. You’re going to get all sorts of weather. So he’s good to go.”

Why Were the Browns Not Fully Convinced with Shedeur Sanders Earlier?

The team signaled caution at the start of the week, with Stefanski declining to commit beyond Sunday. “I’m just gonna focus on this week,” he said Monday, a reminder that the depth chart remains performance‑driven while the staff gauges operational command, timing, and decision‑making. That measured posture shifted after Sanders stacked a clean week of practice and the Browns aligned on further evaluation.

The Browns were impressed by Sanders’ first start, particularly his playmaking, aggressive downfield throws, and ability to buy time and push the ball down the field. The same update noted he “will have to continue to get comfortable playing in structure and on time,” which is the core developmental emphasis if he is going to hold the job beyond Week 13.

Cleveland’s quarterback room thinned quickly this fall. Joe Flacco was traded to the Cincinnati Bengals, and then Gabriel entered protocol in Week 11, creating runway for Sanders once he earned first‑team reps.

Sanders’ demeanor drew positive reviews in the building during a week of heightened attention. Asked about outside narratives, he declined to engage in controversy: “What people do outside the building isn’t really in my control… Coach Stefanski has been coaching since I got here. He tells me what I need to do on and off the field. We’ve definitely grown. Our relationship and everything has grown, so I’m just thankful to be here.”

Sanders’ second start provides another data point; if he sustains Week 12’s flashes while tightening timing, Cleveland is prepared to keep him in place and evaluate on a week‑to‑week basis.
