Is there some clarity around Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin’s future with the Rebels? On Friday, Kiffin was leading his team, ranked No. 7 in the College Football Playoff Rankings, in the Egg Bowl against the Mississippi State Bulldogs in Starkville, Miss.
Kiffin was trying to get Ole Miss to an 11-win season, the first time any school in the state of Mississippi would reach that amount. Questions about Kiffin’s future still swirl around the school, but Ole Miss’ athletic director offered a little insight.
What Did Ole Miss AD Say About Lane Kiffin?
According to a report aired on ESPN’s broadcast of the Ole Miss-Mississippi State game, Ole Miss athletic director Keith Carter told ESPN that he believes Kiffin will stay at Ole Miss.

Additionally, Carter told ESPN that a decision on Kiffin’s future would be made on Saturday. “But we have a plan if he leaves,” Carter said.
As the college football world has been trying to read tea leaves on where Kiffin might go between LSU and Florida, it appears one of those two schools is now out. Ole Miss is looking to win with quarterback Trinidad Chambliss leading the offense. According to the PFSN CFB QB Impact metrics, Chambliss has an impact score of 92.4 and grades out to an A-.
According to media reports, Kiffin is no longer being considered for the head coaching position at Florida. Why? According to reports, there have been conflicting signs and limited communication between Kiffin and Florida. The Gators fired Billy Napier earlier this season.
Kiffin has a ton of college football experience, ranging from time with the Tennessee Volunteers as a head coach to working under Pete Carroll at USC and being the Trojans’ head coach, too. He’s in his sixth season at Ole Miss and has taken the program to new heights under his leadership.
Before Friday’s game, Kiffin talked with SEC Network reporter Marty Smith about the coaching rumors. Kiffin simply waved it all off as “noise” and said it had been out there for weeks. Despite his comments, that hasn’t quieted down the rumor mill.
One report from a Penn State insider even suggested that Kiffin might take over the head coaching job at Alabama. Why? Because the heat is on, Crimson Tide head coach Kalen DeBoer is expected to win Saturday’s Iron Bowl against longtime rival Auburn.
The insider suggests that if DeBoer doesn’t win with the heavily favored Crimson Tide going into the game, DeBoer would likely be run out of Tuscaloosa, Ala., and might land a new gig in Happy Valley.
Right now, Kiffin is focused on getting his team into the win column against a longtime rival.
