The Toronto Maple Leafs must strategize urgently to overcome the impasse they have reached. Plagued with injuries to key players and the embarrassing struggle to maintain any consistency going into the second period, especially, the Maple Leafs are truly moving from one disastrous match to another this season.
As the season approaches a critical juncture, the Maple Leafs could be seen undertaking drastic measures to regain some semblance of control over a season that seems to have slipped entirely out of the team’s grasp.
Toronto Maple Leafs Could Go All-Out with Their Tradeable Assets
The Maple Leafs’ 2025-26 season has been a perplexing mess of losses, prompting fans, insiders, and former NHL players to share their thoughts on the situation. Jay Rosehill took to his social media to express his thorough disillusionment with the Maple Leafs’ current state. “This is just ugly. I can’t find a single positive or redeeming thing about the team right now. They have to get healthy. Even then, I still wonder,” the former blueliner ranted.
Now, in his recent mailbag for The Athletic, insider Chris Johnston has written that GM Brad Treliving is really in no position to be picky about his trade candidates. While Treliving believes that it is unlikely that a few trades will resolve the situation, it remains a possibility.
“While Treliving has vowed that he can’t trade himself out of this predicament, it hasn’t kept the general manager from gauging the market on his players to see if some kind of shakeup is out there,” Johnston wrote.
Consequently, unless restrictions like no-trade and no-movement clauses bog him down, the others are very exposed to the vagaries of the NHL trade market. “He has some limitations in the form of no-trade and no-movement clauses in a number of contracts, plus the fact he’s not currently trying to deal from a position of strength. Still, very little can be ruled out as a possibility at this point,” Johnston added.
Moreover, the Leafs’ current state is so beyond help that Treliving has little luxury in this situation; anyone who isn’t an obvious trade candidate is vulnerable right now. “The Leafs aren’t at a point where they’re shopping superstars, but every player below that tier on the roster could be considered available if the right trade came along.”
Of course, Toronto never really found a replacement for Mitch Marner, as the winger parted ways with the franchise to join the Vegas Golden Knights, with many in the community losing faith in the team after that. Marner was a crucial component in the Maple Leafs’ lineup and one of the Core Four, which has been destabilized after his highly publicized and contentious exit.
