Taurean York is a linebacker from Texas A&M who is ranked No. 41 on my NFL Draft Top 100 Big Board. This comprehensive scouting report analyzes York’s draft potential, current mock draft trends, and where he ranks among the top prospects.
Taurean York’s NFL Draft Potential
Taurean York won’t be above Anthony Hill Jr. on many boards, but my scale gives York the edge in spite of his size deficiencies. At 5’10”, with likely sub-31″ arms, he won’t be every defensive coordinator’s preferred mold. But look past the size, and you’ll see: York already has good compact mass for his frame at almost 230 pounds, and he’s one of the best MIKE linebackers in the class.
He’s a two-time captain and an elite processor who can command his unit pre-snap and play with offensive protection looks, and he’s a fast-flowing support presence post-snap, who can erase running space with his lightning-quick burst and closing speed. On top of it all, he’s a fluid and instinctive coverage LB, and a sturdy tackler in space, in spite of his lacking length.
CFB Week 9 Update
It was more of the same from York, who flew around the field in Texas A&M’s 49-25 win over the LSU Tigers. While his lacking length impacts his ability to fully decouple from second-level blocks at times, York’s fast processing and angle IQ enable him to sear past climbers more often than not, and remain a factor in pursuit.
He got in on one tackle for loss in Week 9, and he also maintained depth discipline in short coverage zones on crucial downs. York won’t pass everyone’s size thresholds, but he’s a very good football player who produces more quality tape each week.
CFB Week 10 Update
Texas A&M was on a bye in Week 10, but the Aggies will return to action in Week 11 against the ranked Missouri Tigers. It’ll be a good test for all of Texas A&M’s draft-eligible talent, as Missouri is especially strong in the trenches.
CFB Week 11 Update
York didn’t fill the stat sheet as much against Missouri, but he continues to make an impression as a fast-flowing second level defender with elite processing and football IQ. While the Tigers got the better of the Aggies in the running game at times, York was rarely the culprit.
He sniffed out play directions quickly, flowed to the ball and washed over gaps, and he was quick to recognize and close on short hitch routes. There are times when he struggles to get off blocks with his smaller frame, but overall, he checks all the boxes as a future MIKE with fusing in-game intelligence and motorized athleticism.
CFB Week 12 Update
South Carolina rocketed to an early lead against Texas A&M with the help of two deep touchdowns and a returned fumble for a score, but once the Gamecocks had to try and string together drives to stay ahead, Taurean York was there to help stall their momentum and place the game back in the Aggies’ control.
York’s trademark focus, fast processing, red-hot motor, and gap intelligence showed up time and time again on early downs, and he used his attacking range and physicality to notch 1.5 tackles for loss along the way for the Aggies’ comeback.
