Outrage Erupts As NHL Makes Final Decision on Dallas Stars Forward Mikko Rantanen’s Reckless Act

Mikko Rantanen’s hit on Alexander Romanov sparks outrage as the NHL opts against further discipline, leaving fans and the Islanders furious.

The Dallas Stars built their roster around strong scorers and veteran voices, hoping their mix would carry them through tough stretches. Instead, they now find themselves dealing with a controversy that has pulled the spotlight away from their play on the ice.

A late collision involving Mikko Rantanen has pushed the Stars into the center of an emotional debate, creating anger, uncertainty, and a growing sense of frustration. That rising tension leads directly into the question hanging over the league’s decision.

Did the NHL Get It Wrong With Mikko Rantanen’s Boarding Incident?

Mikko Rantanen’s night against the New York Islanders changed in an instant. As the final half-minute ticked away in the 3-2 game, he delivered a check to Alexander Romanov, and the impact sent the Islanders defenseman headfirst into the boards. Romanov stayed down for several minutes and needed assistance leaving the ice, which immediately set off reactions from both benches. Rantanen was given a five-minute major for boarding and a game misconduct, ending his night on a chaotic note.

Patrick Roy reacted with fury from the Islanders’ bench. Upset about the hit and the way the moment unfolded, he shouted across the ice at Rantanen, warning him, “You are not gonna f***ing finish that game!” His frustration spread to the Dallas bench as well, creating a heated scene during the final seconds of regulation.

Despite how it looked in real time, the NHL later ruled that the on-ice penalties were enough. NHL insider Elliotte Friedman shared the update on X, writing, “Per @Lassimak, no supplemental discipline expected for Rantanen. Contact with Mayfield before collision was a factor in the outcome. Islanders obviously very unhappy. Outlook for Romanov unclear, but he had shoulder surgery there a couple of years ago, so, unfortunately, there is concern.”

The decision immediately drew strong reactions from fans across X. One fan called the shove “one of the dirtiest and most dangerous” plays they had seen in a long time and said the league had failed to protect players. Another warned that the ruling would only make the rematch more intense and predicted Rantanen would have “a huge target on his back.”

As more fans weighed in, the tone shifted from anger to disbelief. One highlighted Roy’s warning as “an all-time bad*** move,” while another circled back to concerns about consistency in player safety. One fan wrote, “There’s a difference between being off balance and extending your arms to finish a check into the boards,” arguing that the league should have taken a firmer approach. The responses varied, but they all shared concern about Romanov.

The controversy arrives at a time when Rantanen is one of Dallas’ most important players. The 29-year-old forward, who was traded to the Stars from Carolina in March and later signed an eight-year, $96 million contract, has been producing at a high level. He has nine goals and 18 assists in 20 games and has been a significant part of the power play.

Dallas needed every bit of that offense against the Islanders, but still came up short. Jason Robertson scored twice, yet the Stars could not overcome Kyle Palmieri’s short-handed goal and strong play from New York. The 3-2 loss only added weight to an already emotional night, leaving the Stars frustrated.
