Numerous issues plague the Edmonton Oilers; most notable among them are the team’s goaltending woes and defense shortcomings. The team is in a precarious situation, having faced numerous ups and downs, perhaps more downs than ups, so far this season. The Oilers have also not secured enough regulation wins so far, as they stand in the middle of the Pacific Division.
While the men in blue and orange grapple with the intense scrutiny of the community, owner Daryl Katz has become significantly wealthier.
Edmonton Oilers Boss, Daryl Katz, Features Among Canada’s Wealthiest People
According to Maclean’s in 2024, Katz’s net worth was $5.84 billion, and within a single year, it jumped to $7.4 billion: a dizzying $1.56 billion increase. In the list of the wealthiest people of the country compiled by MacLean’s, Katz was ranked 29th in 2024, while in 2025, thanks to his increased wealth, he sits at 28th.
Before sports and entertainment, there was something else. The Oilers’ owner amassed his wealth through the creation of one of the country’s largest pharmacy groups. He then eventually sold it to the US healthcare giant McKesson.
“Born and raised in Edmonton, Katz earned his fortune from the revival of the Rexall drugstore brand, which he built into one of Canada’s largest pharmacy groups before selling it for $2.9 billion in 2016,” Maclean’s shared about Katz in their 2025 compilation “The Rich List”.
Katz has more plans to amp up the entertainment value of Edmonton. “Earlier this year, Daryl Katz’s sports and entertainment company, OEG Inc., reached a memorandum of understanding with the city of Edmonton and the province of Alberta to expand the ICE entertainment district.”
In the first lap, Katz spearheaded the creation of a massive 25-acre shopping and entertainment district surrounding Rogers Place, the home arena of the Oilers. His next move would also include residential options with ample greenery, as well as an expansion of the existing entertainment district.
“Its first phase was a $2.5-billion, 25-acre dining, shopping and entertainment district in downtown Edmonton that surrounds Rogers Place, the arena where the Edmonton Oilers–also owned by Katz–play. This next phase will add 140,000 square feet of event space, plus a housing development with green space and 2,500 units,” Maclean’s wrote about the Edmonton native’s big plans for the future.
Moreover, Katz has his fingers wrapped around other ventures as well. Solidifying his presence in the entertainment sector, Katz made some significant moves through his company, OEG Inc., “Through his company, OEG Inc., Katz’s current interests include film and television studio Dark Castle Entertainment and restaurant groups Concorde and Oliver & Bonacini,” Maclean’s reported in 2024.
With more big plans for the future, we will likely spot his name in the 2026 edition of Canada’s wealthiest people as well.
