Damning Evidence Proves Oilers’ $74 Million D-Man Darnell Nurse’s Time Could Be Up

A look at Darnell Nurse’s declining play and how his $74 million contract is becoming a growing concern for the Edmonton Oilers this season.

The Edmonton Oilers entered the season believing their defence would finally support their elite forward core. Instead, the early weeks have revealed cracks that grow wider with every mistake, and the pressure is now squarely on players expected to anchor the back end. Few names draw more attention than Darnell Nurse, whose role and contract place him at the centre of every discussion about what is going wrong.

Those concerns have intensified as the Oilers continue to fight through inconsistency. The team is collecting points, but too often the wins come with warning signs, and too many of the same issues keep recurring with the same player. It creates a natural transition to the biggest question surrounding Edmonton’s back end.

Is the Oilers’ $74 Million Gamble on Darnell Nurse Reaching Its Breaking Point?

The conversation took a sharp turn when Rono, a Czech analytics creator known for his five-on-five data cards, shared a single-word assessment of Darnell Nurse’s season on X: “Brutal.” The graphic he posted did the rest. It showed a steep decline in both offensive and defensive impact, painting a picture of a top-pairing defenceman producing bottom-pair results. For someone carrying an eight-year contract worth $74 million, the numbers hit hard.

The nurse’s basic profile doesn’t look disastrous at first glance, after the initial 20 games. He has recorded three goals and four assists, and continues to log heavy minutes on the top pair. However, once the deeper analytics are revealed, the situation becomes far more concerning. His offensive score sits at 25, with almost every underlying metric pointing downward. Only his finishing grade looks positive, which is hardly the trait Edmonton pays $9.25 million per year to prioritize. Everything else, from assists impact to penalties drawn, signals that he isn’t driving play the way a top defender must.

The defensive side is just as troubling. Nurse’s defence score sits at 28, weighed down by poor impact numbers, too many penalties, and no special-teams value. For a defender who once carried top-pair reliability, the trend line is unmistakable. Rono’s chart shows his performance dipping year after year, with this season standing as the lowest point on both offense and defense. For the Oilers, who dedicate almost 10 percent of their salary cap to Nurse, the visuals are difficult to dismiss.

In his 21st game against the Buffalo Sabres (a 5-1 loss), Nurse did not record a point and finished -2 with five shots on goal. His seven points through 21 games would be tolerable in a sheltered role, but Nurse is expected to face top matchups every night. His minus-8 rating reflects repeated struggles in his own zone. His November stretch has been particularly empty, showing no points in nine games. Despite averaging nearly 21 minutes per night, the impact of those minutes has faded, and at times, he has hurt the group more than he has helped.

The Oilers are still finding ways to win games, and their stars continue to pull them forward. But while the results occasionally fall in their favour, the evidence around Nurse grows harder to ignore. Every analytic model and every trend chart point in the same direction. For a player with five years remaining on a massive contract, that reality could force some difficult decisions.

Right now, the question is no longer whether Nurse is struggling. The question is how long the Oilers can afford to let it continue.
