As trade rumors begin to swirl around Dallas Mavericks star Anthony Davis, he is making headlines for reasons other than basketball. The Chicago native, who continues to miss games with an injury, recently showed public support for the Green Bay Packers by wearing a Jordan Love jersey, adding a complicated layer to his future.
What Did Anthony Davis Say About His Packers Fandom?
During the Mavericks’ Media Day, Davis explained how his allegiance to the Packers began. “So, I wasn’t into football when I first go in the NBA right, and my head coach at the time, Monty Williams told me that I have to have a football team. The way the Bears were going, it probably wasn’t gonna happen, and Randall Cobb went to Kentucky, so I was just cheering for whatever team he goes too. Been a Packers fan since.”
Mavericks F/C Anthony Davis was seen last night wearing a Packers Jordan Love jersey on the sidelines, which has generated A LOT of conversation.

The connection stems from their shared history at the University of Kentucky. Davis played for one season, 2011-2012, during which he won a National Championship and was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four before declaring for the NBA draft.
Meanwhile, Cobb spent three years at Kentucky, initially as a quarterback before becoming an All-American wide receiver. The Packers drafted Cobb in the second round of the 2011 NFL Draft, which established the connection that sparked Davis’s interest in the game of football.

Despite the understandable reason of supporting a friend, Davis’s public support for the Packers is unlikely to go over well with Chicago Bears fans. Even though Cobb is retired, Davis could have shifted his loyalty. With Love emerging as a top young quarterback for Green Bay, the Bears now have their own potential franchise star in Caleb Williams, whom Davis could support instead.
This off-court storyline is developing while Davis is sidelined once again. He has appeared in only five games for the Mavericks this season while dealing with a left calf strain. This extended absence, which follows a month-long adductor strain that he suffered in 2024-25, has frustrated a Dallas fan base still upset over the team trading Luka Doncic.
Furthermore, the recent firing of former general manager Nico Harrison is rumored to be the first move in a larger organizational rebuild. This overhaul could place Davis and other veterans on the trade block next year. While there is already speculation that Davis is intrigued by playing for his hometown Chicago Bulls, his public backing of their biggest rival will likely not endear him to Bulls fans either.
