Bucky Irving Injury Update

Irving has been out since suffering his injuries during Tampa Bay’s Week 4 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles. Tampa Bay’s decision to keep him on the active roster rather than placing him on injured reserve initially suggested they expected a brief absence. That choice now looks misguided, as Irving has missed six consecutive games since that early season loss.

Head coach Todd Bowles has offered minimal encouraging news throughout the entire absence. Bowles mentioned Irving had progressed enough to run, but emphasized the shoulder issue remains the primary concern since Irving hasn’t taken any contact.

Prior to last week, Irving’s outlook was quite grim. On Monday before Week 11, Greg Auman reported: “No real injury news from Todd Bowles — no expectation of Godwin, Irving or Reddick returning to practice this week right now”. Bowles also said Monday that he didn’t expect Irving to play Week 11 against the Bills.

However, Irving did return to practice last week. He participated all three days in a limited capacity, marking the first time he’d been on the practice field since the injury. The Bucs held walkthroughs all three days rather than full practices, which means no contact occurred.

Despite practicing throughout the week, Irving was ruled out on Friday for the Bills game. He couldn’t even draw a questionable tag, which doesn’t paint a great picture for his short-term outlook.

Bowles provided an update Friday on Irving and fellow injured offensive weapon Chris Godwin. According to Auman: “Bowles said Irving and Godwin made progress in their first week back at practice, but it’s not even a sure thing they’d be ready to play next week against the Rams. Clearly being careful with both before bringing them back”.

Bowles told reporters Friday that both players’ progress was “very good” and each is going through a process to return. However, he stopped short of committing to either being available for Week 12.

The final hurdle Irving must clear is proving he can take a hit on his shoulder. The Bucs did not test it out last week during their walkthroughs, and it remains to be seen if they will try this week with actual padded practices. There is still a chance Irving never ends up getting cleared for contact.

Nevertheless, Irving’s appearance at practice is objectively a positive step. It does now appear he will play again this season after weeks of uncertainty. On Monday, Bowles said “Irving and Godwin will be worked in more this week in practice and [he’ll] evaluate them at the end of the week.”

This is obviously more good news. But reading the tea leaves, it still sounds as if Irving is tracking more toward a Week 13 or 14 return.

Irving Fantasy Outlook

Irving’s absence has coincided with Tampa Bay’s offensive struggles, particularly their inability to generate explosive plays in the running game. During the first four weeks of the season, Irving established himself as the clear RB1, producing efficiently both as a rusher and receiver.

Through four games this season before the injury, Irving rushed for 237 yards and caught 19 passes for 193 yards and two touchdowns. He averaged 18.0 PPR points per week, establishing himself as one of fantasy’s most dynamic backs before going down.

Rachaad White has handled the bulk of the work during Irving’s absence, and the results have been underwhelming. White had an opportunity to prove this backfield should operate with a more balanced split, but he’s failed to replicate the big plays that made Irving so valuable. His longest rush this season measures just 16 yards, while his longest reception sits at 18 yards.

If Irving does return at some point, he’ll immediately reclaim his role as the lead back. His talent level and proven production make him irreplaceable in Tampa Bay’s offensive scheme. The question is whether that return happens soon enough to matter for fantasy purposes.

Fantasy managers who’ve held Irving through this prolonged absence should continue monitoring his practice participation. The fact that he’s back on the field after weeks of complete absence represents meaningful progress, even if the timeline for his return remains uncertain. Week 13 or 14 appears to be the most realistic target for his comeback.
