Jannik Sinner’s Wholesome Moment with Carlos Alcaraz Right Before Perfect Group Stage End

Sinner completed an undefeated group stage at the 2025 Nitto ATP Finals with a commanding straight-sets victory over Ben Shelton on November 14. The Italian defeated the American 6-3, 7-6(3) in their round-robin clash at the Inalpi Arena in Turin, extending his remarkable indoor hardcourt winning streak to 29 consecutive matches without dropping a set.

Shelton started promisingly in the second set, dropping just two of 18 service points through the opening nine games, but Sinner’s control proved decisive in the tie-break, where he won with a series of clean approaches that overpowered his opponent.

With this victory, Sinner topped the Björn Borg Group and booked his place in the semifinals. However, the most memorable moment from the buildup to the match came just before the players took the court.

As Sinner was walking through the hallway, he met Alcaraz, who, in a display of genuine sportsmanship, gave him a high-five and said “bravo” to acknowledge the Spaniard’s achievement of securing the year-end World No. 1 ranking.

This marked a wholesome moment between the two fiercest rivals on court, who are known for their close friendship off the court.

The Intense Rivalry Between Sinner and Alcaraz for the Year-End World No. 1

The fight for the No. 1 ranking between Sinner and Alcaraz has defined the 2025 tennis season. Sinner’s initial reign as World No. 1 began on June 10, 2024, and spanned a remarkable 65 consecutive weeks at the summit. However, his historic run came to an end in September this year, when Alcaraz defeated him in the US Open final with a score of 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, reclaiming the No. 1 spot.

Sinner showed resilience shortly after, winning the Rolex Paris Masters on November 2 by defeating Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-4, 7-6(4), which earned him a brief return to No. 1.

The positioning remained competitive heading into the ATP Finals, as it provided a last chance to earn crucial points. The numbers required told the story: Alcaraz needed to win three matches at the season finale to mathematically secure the year-end No. 1 ranking, while Sinner needed to remain undefeated throughout the tournament to have a realistic chance.

On November 13, Alcaraz defeated Lorenzo Musetti 6-4, 6-1 in his third group stage match to clinch the year-end World No. 1 ranking, ensuring he would finish 2025 atop the ATP Rankings regardless of the tournament’s outcome.

This marked the second time Alcaraz has finished a year as No. 1, having previously achieved the honour in 2022 as a 19-year-old. With this secured position, Alcaraz has ended Sinner’s opportunity to finish the year on top, though their rivalry continues through the semifinals and potential final.
