Auburn Boosters Already Taken Liking to $15M Head Coach As DJ Durkin Faces Steep Task

Auburn boosters are warming up to a $15M head coach as DJ Durkin faces a tough challenge turning the program around.

When the Auburn Tigers fired Hugh Freeze on Nov. 2, they did not just create another coaching vacancy, they kicked off a high-stakes race for the future of the program. The move left the prestigious Power Four job open, immediately thrusting the team into uncertainty.

While interim head coach DJ Durkin just led the Tigers’ best offensive performance of the 2025-26 season, a 544-yard effort in a narrow 45-38 overtime loss to the No. 14 Vanderbilt Commodores, the search for a permanent leader is already zeroing in on one of the hottest names in college football.

Who Is the Leading Candidate for the Auburn Coaching Job?

As several top programs hunt for new head coaches, the SEC powerhouse must move quickly to secure the best candidate. Even with the Tigers navigating a difficult 4-6 record, the program’s boosters have reportedly taken a strong interest in Tulane Green Wave coach Jon Sumrall. During this week’s episode of the “CFB Insiders” podcast, analyst John Talty explained why Sumrall and Auburn are a good match for each other.

“I haven’t seen them holding hands in public yet (Sumrall and Auburn), but certainly there seems to be some flirtation there,” Talty said. “Even before they fired Hugh Freeze, Jon Sumrall was a name that was tied to the Auburn search. He’s one of the hottest Group of Six candidates in the country. He did a great job in the state of Alabama, building Troy before taking the Tulane job.”

Talty also noted that Sumrall’s success could provide him with numerous options. “After beating Memphis on Friday, Tulane has a great chance of making the playoffs. He’s gonna have an option of most jobs most likely. Auburn is a job that’s a good mutual fit between Jon Sumrall and Auburn.” Landing him would require a major commitment, as On3 reporter Pete Nakos reported that Sumrall signed a new five-year deal with Tulane in December 2024 worth $15 million.

Why Is Sumrall Considered the Favorite?

Other prominent voices in college football share Talty’s view. During a recent segment of the “Matt Barrie Show,” ESPN analyst Paul Finebaum identified Sumrall as the favorite for the job, emphasizing the high regard in which the Auburn position is held.

“One of those four has a betting favorite, whether that means anything or not,” Finebaum said. “And the betting favorite at Auburn is Jon Sumrall, the Tulane coach who held on Friday night (won at Memphis, 38-32).”

Finebaum added that the hire would likely be well received by the fan base. “It’s not the hire that wows America, but if that ends up being the case, and we’re speculating, I think almost every Auburn fan that I’ve talked to would be thrilled. That job is so much better than I think it’s being given credit for.”

Sumrall’s track record speaks for itself. Before departing for Tulane, he led the Troy Trojans to a 23-4 record and back-to-back Sun Belt Conference championships in two seasons. So far, he has guided the Green Wave to a 7-2 record this season and a 16-7 overall record during his tenure.
