Ex-Maple Leafs Enforcer Gives Up on Toronto After Auston Matthews’ Injury

Former Toronto Maple Leafs enforcer Jay Rosehill questions the team’s toughness after Auston Matthews’ injury, as the Leafs struggles to find consistency.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are struggling for consistency this season. With key players missing and their defensive issues continuing, the team’s early rhythm has been disrupted. Each game brings new challenges, testing their depth and resolve.

With Auston Matthews sidelined, the Leafs now find themselves at another critical point. His injury has not only raised concerns about the team’s scoring balance but also sparked frustration among fans and former players.

Has Former Enforcer Jay Rosehill Lost Faith in the Maple Leafs After Matthews’ Injury?

Matthews’ latest injury has reignited criticism around the Toronto Maple Leafs’ character and structure. The 28-year-old centre, known for his all-around game and sharp shot, left the team’s 5-3 loss to the Boston Bruins after taking a hard hit from Nikita Zadorov. Although he walked without visible discomfort after the game, the team listed him as day-to-day with a lower-body issue.

Matthews’ absence comes at a difficult time. The Leafs have dropped three straight games and continue to struggle defensively. Before the injury, Matthews had nine goals and five assists in 17 games, with a +9 rating and an average of over 21 minutes per night.

Losing their captain is a significant setback for a team already struggling with inconsistency. Matthews remains under contract through the 2027-28 season on a four-year, $53 million contract with a $13.25 million cap hit.

However, not everyone is confident that this group can handle the pressure. Former Maple Leafs enforcer Jay Rosehill shared his disappointment on X, saying this team lacks the unity and grit that once defined Toronto sports.

“You know how the Blue Jays were like this really tight, lunchpail gang who were relentless and just willed things to happen? Ya, this hockey team doesn’t seem to have that at all,” Rosehill wrote on X.

Rosehill’s post compared the Leafs’ mentality to the relentless spirit shown by the Toronto Blue Jays, who recently played in the World Series. It suggests that the Leafs have yet to find that same edge.

While it may be too early to count them out, Rosehill’s frustration captures what many fans are beginning to feel. Toronto’s offensive talent remains strong, but without Matthews at full strength, the team’s flaws become harder to overlook.

NHL Analyst Questioned Matthews’ Role As Leafs’ Captain

Matthews is leading the Maple Leafs in his second year as team captain, but his leadership has come into question early. Former Leafs general manager Gord Stellick questioned Auston Matthews’ role as captain on “The Fan Morning Show”. Stellick said Matthews is “laid back” and has not fully embraced the role of captain.

Stellick also linked the Leafs’ inconsistent start to weak team leadership. So, he said, fans expect more since Matthews replaced John Tavares as captain in 2024.

“They made a big deal about giving Auston the ‘C’ and taking it from John Tavares,” Stellick said. “So we’re right to have certain expectations… That’s a team thing [Leafs losing game], and that includes him. And there should be more on the leaders about why is that happening, … how can you stop it.”

Stellick pointed out that leaders like Matthews should do more to fix team issues.
