In the second period, the Edmonton Oilers were booed by their home crowd at Rogers Place. However, in the third, captain Connor McDavid came through in full force, and viewers everywhere realized anew that he truly is a generational talent. The Oilers were reduced to pulp by three consecutive losses. Appeals from fans ranged from calling for the removal of Stuart Skinner to the outright dismissal of coach Kris Knoblauch.
Initially, the showdown against the Columbus Blue Jackets appeared fated to meet the same end, but McDavid channeled his optimum hockey wisdom and skills, scoring two goals in the third period to breathe new life into the game. As expected, fans are stoked.

The 11-year veteran’s two goals were just what the Oilers needed to cling to any remaining hope they had to save the day. Jake Walman and Jack Roslovic did the rest of the work. Walman scored the Oilers’ maiden goal and then skilfully tied the game 4-4 at 19:02 of the third period. Roslovic sealed Edmonton’s fate 56 seconds into overtime by scoring the crucial breakaway goal against the Blue Jackets.
However, the star of the show was undoubtedly McDavid.

His first goal against Columbus was simply poetry in motion. It was a startling reminder that, despite the rough patch the Oilers have hit early in this season, the 28-year-old remains an asset like no other for the team. Consequently, fans couldn’t help but express their admiration for the force of nature that McDavid is.
“Just rewrote physics mid-stride and left gravity guessing,” commented one social media user, their mind clearly blown by the captain’s exceptional footwork. Another X user bestowed the highest compliment upon McDavid, stating that the goal is equivalent to high art. “This goal is too good to hang in The Louvre.”
Taken aback by the goal, another NHL fan believes that it really does not get any better than this. “Goal of the season. Easily.” While the praise may seem unsubstantiated, given the season is still nascent, McDavid’s goal will undoubtedly be hard to rival.
Ultimately, McDavid is a seasoned player with a unique skill set. An observant fan pointed out that the crucial third-period goal is a testament to the fact that the 28-year-old is simply a well-rounded player with an enviable hockey IQ. “McDavid’s play illustrates unmatched edge work, reaction time, and spatial precision in tight lanes.”
Through 17 games this season, McDavid has tallied seven goals and 17 assists for 24 points, averaging 1.41 points per game. Despite the Oilers’ early-season struggles, the captain remains on track for his fifth consecutive 100-point campaign and sits tied for fourth in NHL scoring.
The battle against the Blue Jackets showed that the Oilers still have a lot of fight left in them. Besides McDavid, Jake Walman also scored twice and added an assist, including a shorthanded equalizer with 58 seconds left, while Jack Roslovic’s overtime winner lifted the Edmonton Oilers to the 5-4 comeback victory. Next up, the Oilers will play the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday.
