Patrick Mouratoglou Provides an Assessment of Ben Shelton’s Success

Shelton clinched his berth at the Nitto ATP Finals after advancing to the quarter-finals of the Rolex Paris Masters in late October, completing his relentless climb through the ATP rankings. Shelton’s qualification proved significant when he defeated Andrey Rublev, the 12th seed, with a commanding 7-6(6), 6-3 victory at Paris.

The performance caught Patrick Mouratoglou’s attention, who shared his assessment of the young American on an Instagram reel, offering insight into why Shelton continues to rise through the rankings.

“I’m not surprised that Ben qualifies for the ATP Finals,” Mouratoglou said in his reel. “He’s very impressive because I remember when he played out of the U.S. for the first time, it was the Australian Open. Before, never in his life, and he reached a quarters.”

Mouratoglou pointed to two qualities he believes make Shelton special. “I think he’s a real competitor, which are probably two of the biggest qualities to be a champion,” he explained. These traits have defined Shelton’s journey this year, especially after he dealt with serious injury. “He got injured at the U.S. Open. He came back and straightaway boom! He plays great, beats Andrey Rublev with a playing a great match.”

I always say that being a champion is about the character, the mindset and he is empowering that extremely well, extremely well. As I said, two biggest qualities is competitiveness and self-esteem, and I think he has both. So, no surprise for me.”

Shelton’s Impressive 2025 Season

Shelton’s 2025 campaign has unfolded as one of the most impressive breakout seasons in recent tennis history. The victory proved transformative for his career trajectory, as he subsequently ascended to a career-high ranking of World No. 6 following the tournament.
