Fans in Tampa Bay are upset, and understandably so. After a brutal loss to the Detroit Lons in Week 7, their chance had the perfect chance to get back on track when facing the hapless New Orleans Saints. It seemed to be going their way when, after a pick-six, they seemed to be in firm control.
Things took a turn for the better near the end of the first half, as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers forced another turnover, this time a fumble, which they recovered in the end zone. But that’s when a brutally bad job by the referees altered the game entirely, leading to instant backlash from the fan base.
Buccaneers Fans and Announcers Revolt Against the Referees
Stripping the ball from Rashid Shaheed, it was Antoine Winfield Jr. who immediately came away with the ball, before rushing down the sideline to add the second defensive touchdown of the half for the Buccaneers.
As they turned to celebrating, they were instantly cut short by a rather puzzling sequence of events. The points, reading 13 on the scoreboard, were taken back down to seven, as the play was declared dead after the fumble.
WHAT?!?! Refs blew a whistle (that no one heard) so this touchdown from the Bucs defense is called back… pic.twitter.com/eWaQPbxjWF

The explanation from the referee crew stated that they had blown a whistle signalling the play dead. As a result, Tampa Bay was given back the ball near midfield. However, the move turned doubly costly, as quarterback Baker Mayfield fumbled and gave it right back to the Saints, leading to their first points of the night.
From what should have been 13-0 at a minimum for the Bucs, the scoreboard flipped on its head to read 7-3 going into the halftime break. Fans were understandably aghast, as the announcing crew also put the blame squarely on the officials.
Buccaneers just lost a fumble recovery for a TD for an inadvertent whistle. That’s even more egregious than the Giants losing a recovery on the tush push fumble. Play continued. Nobody stopped. Horrendous call. Just a terrible day for officiating.

As one fan wrote, “The Buccaneers just got hosed out of a defensive touchdown, that is so insanely unfair…! Wowza,” the sentiment was unanimous all across social media. On subsequent replays, no whistle could be heard, making the call even more egregious.
One fan complained, “Bucs just got screwed out of a clear touchdown where no whistle was blown.” Others, too, pointed to hearing no whistle. “Refs just f**ked the Bucs out a td cuz of a whistle they said they blew but never did lmao. Can they make robot refs or something this s*it is unbearable.”

For a Buccaneers team that has had a few questionable calls go against them throughout the season, the fan base was clearly pissed off at the refereeing. “Are you kidding me? Who blew a whistle? What is this officiating? How is that not a fumble recovery TD this is unacceptable from the refs. Refs screwing over the Bucs again.”
The refereeing in the NFL has never been perfect. With how physical the sport is, not to mention the speed at which the game is played, it is impossible for officials to be accurate all the time.
But the complaints from the Bucs fans felt particularly validated, especially when a similar story unfolded in the second half as well. After being ruled a fumble on Shaheed again, the player was overturned to an incompletion.
Greg Auman covered the entire exchange, as his evaporating patience was clear to see. “Another call change against the Bucs — initially ruled a Shaheed fumble recovered by Bucs, but ruled an incompletion.”
Even with a plethora of decisions going against them, the game had been a dominant performance from the team, as they led 17-3 at the end of the third quarter, forcing the Saints to make a change and put in Tyler Shough in place of Spencer Rattler for the first time all season.
