Only being in the NFL for two years, Green Bay Packers RB MarShawn Lloyd has dealt with a slew of injuries, and he has yet to suit up this season.
When did MarShawn Lloyd Get Injured?
During the 2025 Preseason, when the Green Bay Packers faced the Indianapolis Colts, Lloyd was finally ready to return and prove he could make winning plays. After a few decent runs, HC Matt LaFleur called a perfectly timed wheel route. It resulted in a great throw by QB Malik Willis, and Lloyd secured the reception for 33 yards.
These types of big plays are exactly what the Packers wanted to see from their young RB, but once again, the injury issues reared their ugly head, and Lloyd was ruled out for the rest of the game.
Shortly after, the Packers placed Lloyd on IR with a designation to return.
What was the Injury?
In 2024, one of Lloyd’s many injuries was a tweaked hamstring that occurred during the preseason. After dealing with his hamstring issue, Lloyd had an ankle injury, Appendicitis, and a groin injury. Even after all of these issues, Lloyd seemed healthy going into that preseason matchup against the Colts.
After going down on that 33-yard reception and being ruled out of the game, Green Bay announced that the injury was yet another hamstring issue.
Since being placed on IR due to that injury, Lloyd has not returned to practice. His potential return is in limbo, but less than two weeks ago, HC Matt LaFleur gave an update on the second-year RB: “He’s getting closer, I would say.” This was a much-needed update, but since then, Lloyd has remained on IR, and no other information has been revealed.
How Does This Injury Affect the Packers?
Soft tissue injuries, like a hamstring, can linger throughout a season and even a career. When the Packers selected Lloyd in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft, expectations were high for his future with the team. This type of injury luck, or lack thereof, is difficult for any front office to predict, but it is affecting the offense this season.
Star Packers RB Josh Jacobs had an excellent 2024 season, and he looks to repeat in 2025. Currently, a calf issue is slowing down Jacobs’ workload in the offense, and Green Bay is missing a true backup RB.
If Lloyd were healthy, there would be a real chance the Packers would be giving him a decent amount of rushing attempts with Jacobs being injured. Instead, Green Bay may be forced to have their Star RB carry the rushing offense and risk further injuring his calf.
