Alexander Zverev recently shared his thoughts on facing Jannik Sinner in the final of the 2025 Vienna Open. This matchup marks their second meeting of the year, following their encounter in the final of the 2025 Australian Open, which Sinner won. The two players have faced each other seven times on the ATP Tour, with Zverev winning four of those matches.
Leading up to the ATP 500 hard-court tournament in Austria, Zverev competed at the 2025 Shanghai Masters. He reached the third round before falling to the eventual runner-up, Arthur Rinderknech.
Alexander Zverev Speaks Ahead of His Final Match Against Jannik Sinner at Vienna Open 2025
Zverev is seeded second at the 2025 Vienna Open, and he began his campaign by defeating qualifier Jacob Fearnley in the first round with a score of 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(5) and then overcame qualifier Matteo Arnaldi 6-4, 6-4 in the second round.
The former World No. 2 secured a spot in the semifinals when his quarterfinal opponent, Tallon Griekspoor, withdrew from the tournament due to back problems. In the final four match, he defeated fourth seed Lorenzo Musetti with a score of 6-4, 7-5, advancing to the final against Sinner.
During the post-match on-court interview following his victory over Musetti, Zverev was asked about facing Sinner in the final, which will be a rematch from the Australian Open. In response, the German noted that it’s his “fault” for not having faced the former World No. 1 more this year, especially since Sinner has reached so many championship matches.
Zverev mentioned that facing Sinner would be a “great challenge” and that competing against one of the top two players in the world would help him gauge his own playing “levels.”
“I feel like that’s mostly my fault. He’s been pretty much in every single final possible. I haven’t. It’s gonna be a great challenge. I’m looking forward to it. Playing one of the two best players in the world. Seeing where my level really is,” Zverev said.
Meanwhile, Sinner is the top seed at the 2025 Vienna Open, and he started his campaign by defeating Daniel Altmaier, 6-0, 6-2, and Flavio Cobolli, 6-2, 7-6(4), in the first and second rounds, respectively. In the quarterfinals, he eliminated eighth seed Alexander Bublik with a scoreline of 6-4, 6-4.
The former World No. 1 then advanced to the final by overcoming third seed Alex de Minaur in the semifinals, winning in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.
After the Vienna Open, Zverev and Sinner are scheduled to compete at the 2025 Paris Masters, which will take place from October 27 to November 2, 2025, at the La Défense Arena in Paris. Both players are seeded and will begin their runs in the tournament in the second round after receiving first-round byes.
The Italian will face either Alex Michelsen or Zizou Bergs in his opening match, while defending champion Zverev will go up against Camilo Ugo Carabelli, a qualifier or a special exempt in his second-round match.
