The Toronto Maple Leafs have stumbled out of the gate this season. Despite opening with a 5-2 victory, the franchise has failed to build momentum and has already dropped four games. Friday night, they suffered another defeat against Buffalo.
While the Maple Leafs suffered their third consecutive loss, they also absorbed a significant blow to their forward group. Midway through the contest, key winger William Nylander left the ice with an injury, prompting captain Auston Matthews to address the situation.
How Will William Nylander’s Injury Impact the Struggling Maple Leafs?
Toronto entered Friday’s matchup needing a victory. With a 3-3-1 record, another loss would drop them into the bottom half of the Atlantic Division standings. By the final horn, Buffalo had secured a 5-3 win.
While Matthews and Nylander tried to keep Toronto competitive, the defensive corps faltered again under pressure. However, Nylander’s injury dominated the post-game discussion. The forward took a cross-check to his midsection from Sabres forward Jason Zucker.
The contact forced Nylander to leave the bench in the third period. Head coach Craig Berube hasn’t updated his status, leaving fans concerned about Saturday’s rematch. With 14 points through eight games, Nylander leads Toronto in scoring.
His absence would significantly impact the lineup. Matthews addressed the injury situation after the game. “I mean, it’s never ideal when you lose guys to injury, especially key guys,” he said.
The captain continued, “And so, we got guys coming in that haven’t really played or are coming up with very short notice. So in the end, it’s, you know, guys have to pick each other up and encourage each other and do what you can and fill those spots and fill those roles.”
Matthews believes the team is still developing chemistry. “I definitely think we’re still kind of trying to find our game. But like I said, when we compete and play hard like we did tonight. I think we’re going to be happy that out of most of the nights, you just have to stick with it,” he explained.
Auston Matthews Says Maple Leafs Are Still Searching For Their Identity
Matthews also addressed the team’s inconsistent play while expressing optimism about their trajectory. When asked about Friday’s performance, he said, “Yeah, definitely, I thought we had good looks there towards the end and going to third.”
He continued, “I think there was confidence in our room that if we just get one, you know, we’re going to have an opportunity to get another, and you know, we definitely had our opportunity. So sometimes that’s how the game goes.”
Matthews acknowledged Toronto’s inability to protect early advantages but emphasized the team’s commitment to improvement. “So like I said, we’re not going to hang our heads in here; we’re going to continue to pick each other up,” he told reporters.
He added, “We focus on that process that we had for most of the game tonight and clean up some of the little things that make a big difference in 60 minutes. But you’ll get back to work.” The captain maintained an optimistic outlook despite the recent struggles.
While Matthews leads the Maple Leafs with five goals this season, Nylander’s 11 assists pace the team’s playmaking. Berube suggested Nylander might be available for Saturday’s game, though his status remains uncertain heading into the rematch with Buffalo.
