Matt Painter’s ‘NBA Centel’ Remark About G League Recruitment Sparks Fan Debate Over Omer Mayer

Matt Painter shares his thoughts on teams signing up G League players and the proliferation of social media parody accounts. His reaction sparks debate among college basketball fans.

As the college basketball landscape evolves, where one program is allowed to recruit a former NBA G League player, Purdue coach Matt Painter spoke against the proliferation of parody X accounts such as @TheNBACentel.

The painter admitted to having been tricked by the tweets that came out, and in this current age, he isn’t surprised by their spread. However, some college basketball fans aren’t buying the sentiment of the Boilermakers’ coach. They cited the recruitment of former Maccabi Tel Aviv player Omer Mayer this offseason as an example of his hypocrisy in recruiting former professional players.

What Are The Fans Saying About Matt Painter’s ‘NBA Centel’ Remark?

A reporter asked Purdue coach Matt Painter in Thursday’s press conference ahead of the team’s preseason exhibition game against Kentucky for his opinion on the surge of G League players returning to play in college.

Painter used the spread of parody basketball recruitment news accounts as his premise to his opinion in connection to what is happening behind the recruitment scene.

“So, I just think like they’ve piggybacked it and they’re just trying to trick you, right?,” Painter asked. “It’s you’re just kind of at a loss for words like you don’t know what is next. It’s nothing surprises you anymore.”

The NCAA revised its eligibility rules to allow players from the G League to return to college. Recently, Louisville secured the commitment of former four-star prospect and G League veteran London Johnson, while Santa Clara announced Thierry Darlan has committed to the team.

Matt Painter’s comments sparked a debate from college basketball fans who had mixed reactions over the matter on X. One user mentioned Purdue’s acquisition of Maccabi Tel-Aviv player Omer Mayer and said the coach seemed to have implied he’s against recruiting G League players, but he forgot that he’s signed up a professional player.

Another college basketball enthusiast pointed out that a scholarship intended for a high school player was wasted in favor of Mayer. Furthermore, a college hoops fan spoke against the hypocrisy among coaches, calling it “incredible,” and defined the NCAA as a league that currently accepts professionals to play for each program.

Other fans defended Matt Painter, citing the difference between Omer Mayer from Louisville and commit London Johnson.

Another user clarified the 19-year-old player’s status, stating that the ballclub’s program for teenagers could be comparable to the high school programs nationwide.

What Does Omer Mayer Bring To The Table For Purdue?

Omer Mayer is a 6’4″, 215-pound guard who played for Israel in the FIBA U19 World Cup in Switzerland. Mayer averaged 20.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 4.3 assists, and 2.0 steals per game. He dropped 33 points in Israel’s comeback win over Cameroon and scored 24 against Switzerland.

Having Mayer on the lineup further strengthens Purdue, which is ranked No. 1 in the AP preseason poll. He’s expected to play minutes to spell out senior Braden Smith, who, along with Trey Kaufman-Renn and Fletcher Loyer, is returning to lead the Boilermakers’ campaign this season.

The Boilermakers will also welcome returning big man Daniel Jacobsen from a season-ending injury and fellow sophomores Raleigh Burgess and Gicarri Harris. They also acquired Australian center Oscar Cluff and former North Florida player Liam Murphy from the transfer portal.

Matt Painter’s Purdue opens their 2025-26 season in an exhibition game against No. 9 Kentucky on Oct. 24 at Rupp Arena in Lexington, Kentucky.
