Serena Williams’ former coach, Rick Macci, recently expressed his thoughts on Mirra Andreeva failing to secure a spot at the 2025 WTA Finals due to Elena Rybakina’s success. It would have marked the first time Andreeva could participate in the season-ending tournament.
The 2025 WTA Finals is scheduled to take place from November 1 to November 8, 2025. The matches will be held on the indoor hard courts at the King Saud University Indoor Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Alongside Rybakina, other players competing in the tournament include Aryna Sabalenka, Iga Świątek, defending champion Coco Gauff, Amanda Anisimova, Madison Keys, Jessica Pegula, and Jasmine Paolini.
What Did Rick Macci Say About Mirra Andreeva Failing To Secure a Spot at WTA Finals 2025?
Andreeva last competed at the 2025 Ningbo Open, where she was the top seed and began her campaign in the second round after receiving a first-round bye. In her opening match against wild card Zhu Lin, she lost 6-4, 3-6, 2-6. The former World No. 5 was then expected to compete at the 2025 Toray Pan Pacific Open but opted out.
Australian tennis player Ellen Perez later confirmed that Andreeva’s withdrawal from the tournament in Tokyo was due to visa issues. With Andreeva unable to compete at the Toray Pan Pacific Open, Rybakina seized the opportunity to secure the final spot at the WTA Finals, surpassing the former World No. 5 by reaching the semifinals in Tokyo.
Reacting to Andreeva missing out on the 2025 WTA Finals, Macci took to social media and stated that not qualifying for the season-ending tournament this year would serve as an “epic lesson” for her.
“Andreeva will be locked loaded and ready to launch in 2026. Not making the 2025 finals will be a epic life lesson like no other. Adversity makes you stronger and lasts longer and the Russian Rabbit will become number one when it is all said and done. @MirraAndreevaFR,” Macci posted on X.

At the 2025 Toray Pan Pacific Open, Rybakina is seeded second and began her campaign in the second round after receiving a first-round bye. She advanced to the semifinals after defeating Leylah Fernandez (6-4, 6-3) and eliminating ninth seed Victoria Mboko (6-3, 7-6(4)) in the quarterfinals.
Who Will Rybakina Face at the 2025 Toray Pan Pacific Open SF?
Following her victory over Mboko in the 2025 Toray Pan Pacific Open quarterfinals, Rybakina will face sixth seed Linda Nosková in the tournament’s semifinals.
Nosková began her journey at the WTA 500 hard-court tournament in Tokyo in the second round after receiving a first-round bye. She defeated McCartney Kessler in her opening match 5-7, 6-3, 6-4. The Czech then advanced to the semifinals after her quarterfinal opponent, Anna Kalinskaya, retired from their match with the score at 6-0, 1-0 retd.
Rybakina and Nosková have met thrice on the WTA Tour, with the Kazakh winning all three encounters. Their most recent matchup occurred in the third round of the 2025 Wuhan Open, where Rybakina secured a 6-3, 6-4 victory. The winner of the semifinal match between Rybakina and Nosková will advance to face either fifth seed Belinda Bencic, eighth seed Karolína Muchová, or tenth seed Sofia Kenin in the final.
