Serena Williams recently admitted that Carlos Alcaraz is one of her favorite tennis players. The American legend also believes that the young Spaniard has a somewhat plausible chance of overtaking Novak Djokovic’s men’s record tally of 24 Majors.
Serena Williams Talks About Carlos Alcaraz
Williams’ comments to Spanish tabloid ABC emerged this week, where she professed her admiration for World No. 1 Alcaraz. The 23-time Major winner revealed that she often calls the 22-year-old before his marquee matches. She also gave a nod to his predecessor, Rafael Nadal, while praising the Spanish tennis contingent.
“Of course I know it well; the Spanish have been at the top for a long time. There’s Rafa, of course, but there are many other wonderful tennis players. Alcaraz is doing incredible things. I’m a huge fan of Alcaraz. I always call him when he plays, to cheer him on,” Serena Williams said in praise of Carlos Alcaraz.
Furthermore, the 44-year-old also didn’t shy from the possibility of Carlos Alcaraz breaking the Open-era record for most Major titles won by a male player.
“At this point, anything is possible. When Federer started, no one thought he could surpass Sampras, and he did. Then Rafa did the same, and then Djokovic. Carlos is very young, he has great rivals, but of course it’s possible. Records are there to be broken,” she added.
Serena Williams, meanwhile, is arguably the greatest women’s singles player of all time with 23 Majors, 98 overall titles, and 319 weeks as the World No. 1 to her name. Although Carlos Alcaraz has a long way to go before he comes close to matching either Williams’ career achievements, he and the American do share one similarity — they both won their maiden Major title at the US Open as a teen.
Carlos Alcaraz Previously Noted It’s ‘Almost Impossible to Break Novak Djokovic’s Records’
Last May, Carlos Alcaraz spoke briefly about his aspirations of becoming one of the greatest players in tennis history. The Spaniard expressed his wish of eventually “being a part of tennis history”, while also noting how hard it would be to emulate the likes of Novak Djokovic, who is known for his longevity at the top of men’s tennis.
“I know it is almost impossible to break Novak’s records but I’m playing tennis for myself, for joy and I want to do great things. I want to be a part of tennis history,” Carlos Alcaraz claimed in May 2024.
This year, Alcaraz has enjoyed yet another great season on the ATP Tour. Having compiled an incredible 67-7 win/loss record and picked up eight titles — two of which came at the French Open and the US Open — he is a firm favorite to enjoy his first year-end World No. 1 finish since 2022. The 22-year-old is next scheduled to play at the Paris Masters, the ATP Finals, and the Davis Cup Finals.
