Fox Sports and CBS Sports’ College Football announcer Tim Brando has gotten in on the action following the recent controversy in the NBA. From 1994-96, Brando covered the NBA for TNT, including playoffs as a play-by-play announcer and studio host.
The most recent controversy was after Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups was arrested by the FBI for alleged illegal gambling. The head coach was just one of 30 people arrested as part of a years-long investigation covering 11 states.
College Football Announcer Tim Brando Rips Into NBA Commissioner
Following the groundbreaking controversy in the NBA world, Brando took a minute to return to his former role as a basketball commentator. The NCAA commentator took the time to rip into NBA commissioner Adam Silver over the current state of gambling in sports.
The news this morning from the @NBA while incredibly sad ain’t surprising in the least. That said, the League office and its Commish says if we can just get “Federal Help?” 🤦♂️🤷♂️ Don’t get me started on the state of the game. Ouch! https://t.co/I36GXIu5Ya

“The news this morning from the @NBA while incredibly sad ain’t surprising in the least. That said, the League office and its Commish say if we can just get “Federal Help?”Don’t get me started on the state of the game. Ouch!” Brando ranted on Twitter.
As Brando called out Silver, the NBA commissioner recently revealed that, despite the ongoing controversy, the NBA is working closely with gambling and sportsbook sites. Silver appeared on the “Pat McAfee Show” on Tuesday before the controversy was announced.
“We’re trying to put in place — learning as we go and working with the betting companies — some additional control to prevent some of that manipulation.” Silver shared.

A recent report was done. Across 13 games in both the NBA and the NHL, researchers recorded 6,282 instances of gambling-related marketing. This included gambling company logos on jerseys, rinkside, and courtside ads.
This controversy came just a day after the NCAA approved a rule change on Wednesday that will allow athletes and athletic department staff members to bet on professional sports. Last month, the NCAA banned three men’s college basketball players for betting.
Miami Heat Guard Terry Rozier was also one of the 30 people arrested during the investigation. Sportsbooks in multiple states flagged suspicious betting on Rozier’s statistics ahead of a Charlotte Hornets-New Orleans Pelicans game on March 23, 2023.
CBS, which Brando works for, is also beginning to see significant benefits from gambling advertising. Embattled CBS CEO Les Moonves told investors at an earnings call that one of its local stations in Philadelphia is already receiving ad revenue from sports gambling.
Whether it be NCAA and NBA players betting on their own games, broadcasters working closely with Sportsbooks, or advertising towards children. Brando is just one of hundreds of people who have called out the dangers of gambling in sports in recent years.
