Florida State’s Final Straw to Fire Mike Norvell Clear as Locker Room Belief Dwindles

Amid fan frustration and locker room rumors, Mike Norvell's tenure with Florida State continues to get complex. Read more here.

When Mike Norvell’s Florida State Seminoles opened the 2025 season with a 3-0 run, many believed the team was making a strong comeback after last year’s disappointing 2-10 record. But that early momentum has faded, as the Seminoles have now dropped four straight games, falling to 3-4.

Norvell has luckily avoided the fate of other head coaches who were fired midseason. However, he continues to be in the hot seat discussion for weeks now.

What Concerns Does Florida State Hold in Current Situation With Mike Norvell?

On Wednesday’s CBS Sports College Football Podcast, insiders John Talty and Chris Hummer spoke with Florida alum Richard Johnson about Norvell’s current situation at Florida State.

“Ultimately it’s a math problem…A week from now, when they play Wake Forest, it’s like if the crowd’s empty and they’re booing Norville and wanting him fired, that might change the equation a little bit because you have to figure out how much money am I going to lose on ticket sales?” Talty said.

“How much money am I gonna lose on lost donations? When you think about what the loss (of) money might be if you don’t make a move. I think Florida State is thinking about all those things right now when they weigh a possible decision at the end of the year.”

FSU is currently on a nine-game ACC losing streak after finishing the 2023 regular season undefeated. The “Fire Norvell” slogan has also been growing, especially after last weekend’s 20-13 loss to Stanford, which intensified frustration over the squad’s performance.

“Our Florida State site like at our 24/7 sports as well, like they’ve reported something similar. Every single reporter there has heard essentially a variation of like Mike Norvell has lost the locker room in a way or the message isn’t getting through,” Hummer said.

“And when that happens, this offseason, you’re not just talking about adding a few players, fixing a couple holes, and running it back in 2026 and being better. You’re talking about another overhaul potentially for the second season in a row…a full overhaul of the roster.”

Amid all the noise and rumors about locker room issues, the Seminoles’ athletic director, Michael Alford, affirmed the school’s continued support for Norvell. On Wednesday, Norvell said he will give “everything he has” to FSU as head coach to break the losing streak.

Norvell’s squad has a bye week before returning to action on Nov. 1 against Wake Forest, which has been given an impact score of 75.7 on PFSN’s College Football Impact Metrics.
