When Will Connor McDavid Bounce Back? Eye-Opening Stat Shows It’s Only A Matter of Time For Oilers Captain

Connor McDavid’s goals may be slow to come, but the data says a breakout is near and his elite skating and control remain unmatched.

Connor McDavid hasn’t exactly been quiet this season, but he hasn’t been himself either. Through the Edmonton Oilers’ first stretch of games, the captain’s point totals have leaned more on assists than goals, and questions have begun to surface: when will Connor McDavid truly break out?

Is Connor McDavid’s Breakout Just Around the Corner?

Recent NHL EDGE data suggests the answer may be “very soon.” According to Sportsnet Stats, McDavid leads the NHL in average offensive zone possession time at 1:40 per game, a strong indicator that he’s still dictating play even if the goals haven’t flowed yet. Simply put, no one spends more time with the puck in dangerous areas.

His skating metrics tell an even clearer story. McDavid reached a top speed of 24.61 miles per hour, the fastest of his career and the second-fastest recorded league-wide since tracking began in 2021-22. Only Miles Wood (24.82 mph last season) has gone faster.

Those numbers suggest that McDavid’s explosiveness hasn’t dipped. Far from it as he’s already logged 11 bursts over 22 mph and 52 over 20 mph in just six games. Combine that with his seven assists, and it’s clear the Oilers’ captain is still creating offense at an elite rate.

Even so, the Oilers’ early record hasn’t turned heads. The frustration may not come from personal performance for McDavid, but from timing as those game-breaking moments haven’t yet tilted the scoreboard as often as expected.

Edmonton’s Star Hasn’t Lost a Step

In Edmonton’s recent 3-2 overtime win against the Ottawa Senators, McDavid finally found the back of the net. It was his first goal of the 2025-26 campaign and a relief for a player who rarely goes six games without scoring. The power-play marker, a clean one-timer off Ryan Nugent-Hopkins’ pass, snapped the longest goalless stretch to start a season in his career.

The goal seemed to restore some rhythm. His acceleration looked sharper, and his chemistry with Leon Draisaitl resurfaced after a few quieter outings.

That’s encouraging for Edmonton. Their captain’s underlying numbers of possession, speed bursts, and zone entries all mirror those of his most productive seasons. The difference is finishing, and that tends to balance out.

The Oilers now head home for a short stop before another grueling stretch of eight games over 13 nights. McDavid’s resurgence couldn’t come at a better time.

McDavid’s ability to control tempo and tilt the ice remains unmatched. Analysts believe that once the puck luck evens out, the numbers on the scoreboard will catch up to the numbers in the data.

And if the latest signs are any indication, McDavid’s bounce-back might not just be near. It’s already underway.
