Ben Shelton Makes a Triumphant Return After Retirement at the US Open

The 23-year-old was forced to retire during his third-round clash against France’s Adrian Mannarino at the 2025 US Open after suffering a painful left shoulder injury. Up to that point, the American had been pushing the veteran to a fourth set before landing awkwardly on his left arm during a lunge.

The pain was immediate, and though Shelton attempted to continue, his father and coach, Bryan Shelton, eventually made the tough call to halt the match. This marked the first retirement of Shelton’s professional career.

The setback sidelined him from key tournaments, including the Davis Cup qualifiers, the Laver Cup, and the Japan Open. After a rusty return at the Shanghai Masters earlier this month, where he fell in the opening round to David Goffin in straight sets, Shelton seemed determined to find his rhythm at the Swiss Indoors Basel, where he finished runner-up in 2024.

Seeded second, he battled Polish qualifier Kamil Majchrzak in his opening round and pulled off a dramatic 6-7(2), 6-3, 7-6(7) comeback, saving two match points along the way.

Speaking after the match, Shelton acknowledged how special this win felt. “I knew it was going to be a tough one,” he said in his on-court interview, as shared by Tennis Channel on Instagram. “You know, my first match that I’ve won since getting injured, and yeah, just really happy that I was able to create a little bit of momentum and get myself going here in Switzerland.

Trinity Rodman Beams in Pride Over Shelton’s Comeback Victory

Shortly after the clip was posted, Rodman, a forward for the U.S. Women’s National Team and Washington Spirit, reposted the video to her Instagram Stories with the caption, “Proud of u always.”
