The NFL is unlike any other professional sport in terms of player health. When you play in the NFL, you know injuries are a part of the game. Everyone will get hurt at some point, and that is why the league has a 100% injury rate. However, there are still steps that the NFL can take to make the playing conditions as safe as possible.
One of the talking points has been turf vs grass. Some turf is worse than others, and one field that stands out as the worst in the NFL is at MetLife Stadium, home of the New York Giants and Jets. We have seen many injuries occur on that field over the years, and many of them have been season-ending. Yet, the NFL does not seem overly concerned about the playing surface.
NFL EVP Jeff Miller Defends MetLife Surface
Many NFL players have expressed a preference for playing on grass rather than turf, but it does not appear that the NFL has given much weight to this preference. About half of the NFL playing surfaces are turf, and that has been tough on players.
However, the NFL is not willing to admit that turf is a factor in player injuries. According to Armando Salguero, NFL EVP Jeff Miller said, “As it relates to MetLife, they had one of the lowest injury rates, not just in synthetic(turf) but across the league last year.”

Many NFL fans are not buying what Miller is selling. They have seen numerous season-ending injuries occur on that field over the year, including a Torn ACL to Giants wide receiver Malik Nabers only a few weeks ago. Some fans who took to X expressed their disdain.

The NFL should do everything possible to provide players with the best possible playing surface. But changes will never be made if they do not see the problem.
Why MetLife Stadium’s Turf Is Under the Microscope
One way for the NFL to take the surface issue seriously is if all the players speak out and demand change. We have seen some players who frequently played at MetLife discuss the problems with the turf, but that has not been enough.
According to Joe Pompliano, at least 15 players have torn their ACL or Achilles at MetLife Stadium since 2020.

But the Giants and Jets won’t be switching to natural grass anytime soon, as they generate tens of millions of dollars annually from concerts and other events.

But, like most things in the NFL, it is all about dollars and cents, and MetLife makes a lot more money with turf as it allows them to host concerts.
Ultimately, a change of the playing surface at MetLife would likely benefit the players. However, the NFL or its teams are unlikely to sacrifice money to protect the players.
