Ohio State head coach Ryan Day recently shared the story of a wild golf outing that nearly ended in a full-blown confrontation. The candid admission came during his appearance on the “Nonstop with Kirk + Joey” podcast, where Day revealed how one terrible golf shot led to chaos on the course.
Why Did Ryan Day Flee the Golf Course Scene?
Ryan Day has been dodging questions from Joey Galloway about their infamous golf outing for months. The podcast recently shared a 46-second clip where co-host Galloway playfully ribbed the Ohio State coach about the incident, which escalated into a near-fight after Day accidentally hit a box truck with a golf ball.
Galloway wasted no time bringing up the uncomfortable memory. “We’re still trying to get around to golfing. You’ve been looking at your calendar since February,” Galloway said, referencing Day’s reluctance to schedule another round.
In response, Day quickly explained his hesitation to return to the links. “The last time we played golf. Okay, you pulled one and hit a box truck and a guy jumped out and started screaming at us,” Day recalled.
However, the situation turned serious when the truck driver became enraged. According to Day, former NFL wide receiver Joey Galloway and Raymond Harris were ready to confront the angry driver head-on. “Yeah, and he and Raymond Harris went right at the guy and was going to try to fight. Oh, my God, Joey Galloway,” Day said, describing how his companions prepared for a physical altercation.
However, as a high-profile college football coach, Day had different priorities. Galloway described what happened next. “Yeah, at the corner of my eye, I see coach they jump into the golf cart,” he said.

Day admitted to his quick escape without a second thought. “I would have been right there with him. Hey guys, I can’t be out here in a fight. You guys go ahead. I cannot,” Day explained, showing his awareness of the responsibilities that come with his position.
The decision to flee in a golf cart while Galloway and Harris stayed behind highlights the unique pressures coaches face. Day could not risk being caught in a physical altercation that could damage his reputation and career.
Fortunately, the incident has since become a running joke between Day and Galloway. The podcast exchange was lighthearted, with both men laughing about the chaotic moment. “No fights next time coach. Let’s get out there and golf. I’m not going to make the derby with you guys, but golf you set up more up my alley,” Galloway joked.
Day fired back with equal humor. “You s**k,” he quipped, acknowledging the teasing about his golf game and his hasty retreat.
This isn’t Day’s first golf cart-related incident. Earlier this year, he was involved in a crash when a golf cart carrying him and Ohio State players hit a wall in the Mercedes-Benz Stadium tunnel after winning the national championship.
Ultimately, Day’s willingness to share the golf course story shows a more relatable side of the coach. While he leads one of college football’s most successful programs, moments like these remind fans that even elite coaches have their share of awkward situations off the field.
