‘You’re Lying or Being Lied To’ — NFL Fans Rip ESPN’s Adam Schefter After Community Note Contradicts Report

NFL fans are taking shots at ESPN's Adam Schefter after the insider's reports don't line up regarding Vikings quarterback JJ McCarthy.

ESPN’s senior NFL insider, Adam Schefter, is facing significant backlash from football fans over a recent injury report concerning Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy. The controversy ignited when Schefter reported that McCarthy’s high ankle sprain would likely keep him out until a possible Week 9 return against the Detroit Lions, extending backup Carson Wentz’s time as the starter.

However, fans on X, formerly known as Twitter, quickly accused the insider of inconsistent and inaccurate reporting.

Why Are Fans Accusing Adam Schefter of Contradictory Reporting?

The situation escalated after Schefter provided his latest update on McCarthy’s recovery timeline during ESPN’s “Sunday NFL Countdown.” In his report, he clarified the quarterback’s status.

However, many followers immediately pointed out a major discrepancy, citing a previous report where Schefter suggested McCarthy would only miss two to four weeks. This led to a wave of criticism, with fans questioning his credibility.

The backlash was swift and sharp. One user, Sus Edwards, poked fun at the situation, tweeting, “It was always an eight week injury. nothing has changed’ tweet loading.”

Another fan, Seth Wisner, questioned the team’s handling of the injury if the timeline was known, writing, “If they knew it was 6 weeks initially and didn’t IR him, that makes zero sense.” The criticism continued to pour in.

User Jordan posted, “Now he’s getting community noted with his own tweets. WASHED.” Meanwhile, user @MasterChiefn920 said, “Bro said 4 weeks when this mystery injury appeared and now is acting like it’s always been 6. There is no bigger liar then Adam Schefter.”

McCarthy’s potential return comes at a critical time for the Vikings, who are trying to stay competitive in the tough NFC North.

With a 3-3 record, Minnesota has fallen behind the rest of the division, where every other team currently has a winning record. The Green Bay Packers are leading the division with a 4-1-1 record heading into Week 8.

How Has Carson Wentz Performed in J.J. McCarthy’s Absence?

In McCarthy’s absence, Carson Wentz has provided a fairly stable veteran presence for the Vikings, securing key wins and keeping the team competitive. In his first start against the Cincinnati Bengals, he led the team to a dominant 48-10 victory. However, Wentz could not sustain that momentum in the following game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, where the Vikings lost a close contest, 24-21.

Despite the setback, he bounced back just before the bye week with a solid performance against the Cleveland Browns, throwing for 236 yards and a touchdown in a 21-17 win. Following the bye, Wentz faced his former team, the Philadelphia Eagles, and gave them a tough challenge before ultimately losing 28-22.

With his time as the starter potentially winding down, Wentz will look to make the most of his upcoming start against the Los Angeles Chargers, as McCarthy could return by Week 9.
