Deion Sanders has emerged as a potential option to take over the Florida Gators. With an amount of funding and investment that rivals even Penn State’s, and a history of National Title-winning seasons, Florida will be one of the most attractive destinations in College Football.
After Penn State decided to fire James Franklin, The Gators made the decision to move on from head coach Billy Napier who became the next head coach to lose his job. Florida fell to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in SEC play with last Saturday’s loss to Texas A&M.
Deion Sanders’ Florida Ambitions Hit Pause
ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky recently included Sanders in a list of potential coaches to take over for Napier. The Buffaloes head coach was born in Fort Myers, Florida making this an attractive switch for him. The potential move was discussed on “Locked on Buffs.”
“I think there’s so many things that Deion Sanders does now at Colorado that Florida simply wouldn’t allow. Because they aren’t buying into what Coach Prime preaches. I think they’d be excited about the hundreds of millions of dollars he’d bring in revenue.”
According to USA Today, the decision to hire Sanders’ hiring helped lead the department at Colorado to a record $146.6 million in reported revenue and a record $31.2 million in football ticket sales. The head coach signed with the Buffaloes in December 2022.
When he signed for Colorado, the Buffaloes were coming off a 1-11 season. In his first season in charge, Sanders coached them to a 4-8 season. After that, the head coach imrpoved going 9-4 in 2024. Sanders also coached a Heisman winner in Travis Hunter.
One of the main critism’s surrounding the Buffaloes head coach’s time at Colorado, is the culture Sanders has created at Colorado. However, Deion has gone on record to state that he’s fostering a culture that prepares his players for life after their playing careers.
“I think Colorado has embraced Coach Prime and what he brings to a program. They embrace him as a leader of men. They embrace him as a culture changer. At Florida they’d be like, your Deion Sanders, get us some cool five-star recruits and make us cool again.”
Will Lane Kiffin Suit The Culture At Florida?
With the potential Sanders’s move not looking good on paper, another name has emerged as a potential frontrunner for the job, Ole Miss’s Lane Kiffin. According to reports, the Rebel’s head coach would be the ideal candidate for Florida.
“Kiffin should be Florida’s top target within the SEC.” ESPN’s Adam Rittenburg wrote. However, with Ole Miss currently being 6-1 on the season, and high in the AP Top 25 Rankings Poll, there is a real chance that he turns down the job.

“Lane Kiffin. I worry about him going to Florida, are they going to be fine with him tweeting at people? Are they gonna be okay with the shirtless pics after hot yoga on a Saturday before a game. I doubt they’ll be okay with the Lane Kiffin experience.” The podcast host suggested.
Ole Miss is 50-19 since Kiffin took over in 2020, while Florida has posted a record of 36-34 in that same span. And following the Indiana Hoosier’s decison to increase Curt Cignettis contract, the Rebels head coach will surely have an extension offer soon.
“I know that’s your guys’ job to bring it up and all that. We don’t really talk about it. Like, if we’re around there, you wouldn’t know any different or anything.” Kiffin told the media when questioned about the current coaching carousel.
As they continue to search for their next head coach, Billy Gonzales will take over for the rest of the season. His first game as head coach will be against the Georgia Bulldogs. The Bulldogs are coming off a massive win last week.
During his time as a wide receiver coach, Gonzales has worked with some of the best wide receivers in College Football who also made it to the NFL. This includes the likes of Odell Beckham Jr and San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Rickey Perasall.
