Controversy erupted during Denis Shapovalov’s quarterfinal clash at the 2025 Stockholm Open as the Canadian’s frustration with the hostile crowd spilled over. Playing in his wife Mirjam Bjorklund’s home country, Shapovalov endured relentless jeers from the stands, prompting him to later raise his concerns with the chair umpire.
Denis Shapovalov Engages in a Heated Confrontation With the Crowd at Stockholm Open
The Canadian began his Stockholm campaign strongly, defeating home favorite Leo Borg 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 to reach the quarterfinals against another Swede, Elias Ymer. As the third seed, Shapovalov entered the match as the favorite, though the atmosphere in the arena suggested otherwise. The 26-year-old took the opening set 6-4 with confidence, but tensions were only starting to brew.
Ymer broke Shapovalov’s serve twice to race to a 2-0 lead in the second set, while the Canadian faced loud jeers from sections of the crowd. The Canadian’s frustration soon boiled over as he mockingly gestured for the spectators to continue before confronting a local fan in a fiery exchange delivered in their native tongue.
The 26-year-old then turned to the chair umpire, angrily protesting the spectator’s behavior and asking how the fan had been allowed to remain on Center Court.
“He’s flipping me off. He’s flipping me off. Can I flip everyone off? So then, why is he allowed?” Shapovalov said.
Cómo puede tener Shapovalov semejante cafetera en la cabeza?
Lo mejor es que no es la primera que lía con uno de la grada. Recuerdo una en un tie vs Shelton que lo descalificaron directamente hace no mucho.

It is worth noting that Shapovalov married former Swedish player Bjorklund last month in an intimate ceremony at Lesante Cape in Zakynthos, Greece. Yet, despite his personal ties to Sweden, the Canadian found little support from the stands, with the crowd firmly backing their home favorite, Ymer.
What Did Shapovalov Reveal After the Stockholm Open Controversy?
Notably, while leading 5-4 in the first set, Shapovalov appeared to suffer a back spasm and immediately left the court for treatment. After the match, he revealed that the crowd’s boos during his medical break and return felt insulting, even though he’s accustomed to facing partisan fans.
“It wasn’t anything special. I’m used to crowds and used to playing people at home. It seemed like everything was insulting for you guys when I was taking medicals and being booed back on court,” he said after the match.
Man oh man was that Shapovalov spicy.

Despite the hostile crowd, Shapovalov held his composure, overcoming the home favorite 6-4, 6-7(3), 6-1 to secure a spot in the Stockholm Open semifinals. He is set to face Casper Ruud, who advanced by defeating Sebastian Korda 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-4.
