‘Lack of Trust in the League’ – WNBA Exec Slams Cathy Engelbert Amid Napheesa Collier Fallout

WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert faces mounting backlash after Napheesa Collier’s criticism exposed a deep trust crisis within the league.

At this time of the year, the WNBA Finals should be the headline. Instead, the league’s biggest storyline is happening off the court. While A’ja Wilson and Jackie Young torch defenses for Las Vegas, all eyes are on Minnesota Lynx star Napheesa Collier and the widening fallout from her public attack on commissioner Cathy Engelbert.

What began as a frustrated exit interview has turned into an existential crisis for the league, raising serious questions about Engelbert’s leadership and the future direction of women’s basketball.

Why the Cathy Engelbert-Napheesa Collier Feud Won’t Fade?

Three days after Collier called the WNBA “the worst leadership in the world,” Engelbert tried to steady the ship. Speaking before Game 1 of the Finals, the commissioner finally addressed the criticism that’s dominated headlines and fractured locker rooms.

“I was disheartened to hear that some players feel the league, and me personally, do not care about them or listen to them,” Engelbert told reporters. “And if the players in the W do not feel appreciated and valued by the league, then we have to do better, and I have to do better.”

It sounded like patching the cracks, but the timing and tone of the WNBA commissioner did little to change the mood. Engelbert’s remarks came after Collier’s stunning claims — among them, Engelbert had said that players like Caitlin Clark should “be on their knees” in gratitude for their careers and TV deals.

The commissioner has denied those words, calling them “inaccurate,” but the damage was done for most players.

“This is an inflection point for the league,” one longtime WNBA executive told ESPN. “There is a root cause, and it’s lack of transparency, lack of trust in the league and the relationship between the players and the league. You can get transparency overnight. But trust is not built overnight. And [Engelbert has] lost it. She can’t get it back overnight.”

Those words capture the growing sentiment around the league that the issue is no longer about communication but also about credibility.

Collier, who also serves as a vice president of the Players Association, didn’t alert the union before her fiery statement. The Athletic later reported that players “widely agree” with her frustrations. What was once seen as a one-player outburst now feels like the start of a player-led reckoning.

Engelbert Stands at a Precarious Position

Engelbert’s press conference might have been meant to calm the storm Collier brewed, but it only exposed deeper cracks in the league’s foundation. Engelbert denying the accusations outright seems to have done more damage. Colliers was expected to meet with the commissioner, but canceled the meeting following Engelbert’s remark.

Meanwhile, the WNBA’s collective bargaining agreement expires on October 31, and negotiations are barely moving. Both sides accuse the other of stalling. With the commissioner’s credibility collapsing, even the concept of “good faith” negotiation feels out of reach.

Collier’s frustration didn’t come from nowhere. Her breaking point reportedly came after suffering a season-ending ankle injury, an incident that also got her coach, Cheryl Reeve, suspended after she criticized league officiating. It wasn’t bad luck for Collier, but another example of how the league fails to protect and value its stars.

Other players, including A’ja Wilson, Sophie Cunningham, and others, have since voiced support for Collier, widening the front against Engelbert. The optics are dire: the commissioner faces open revolt while her league’s brightest stars shine in the Finals.

Meanwhile, Engelbert’s job security may no longer rest in her own hands. NBA commissioner Adam Silver, her direct superior, addressed the situation.

“Cathy Engelbert has presided over historic growth in the league, but there’s no question that there are issues we need to address with our players,” Silver said, as quoted by USA Today. “They’re not just economic. There are relationship issues, as well. I’m confident we can fix those over time, and this league can continue to be on the rocket trajectory that it’s on right now.”

Silver’s optimism feels fragile at the moment. The league may be on a rocket trajectory, but it’s now flying through turbulence. Players are angry, and Engelbert is suddenly fighting for her professional survival.
